Lost

The etches of disgrace, sorrow
Dig deep, penetrate into the folds
Of once smooth and full skin
And scars of haunted memories
Refuse to be cleansed,
Taint the conscience for eternity.

And battle wounds never fade, but
Stretch over the unforgiving years,
Taut with the sting of bitter victory,
And shadows, dark abysses, replace the once
Starry twinkle, the merriness, in one's surviving eyes.

Gauntness and atrophied limbs
Are all that live on in the silent world
And heavy guilt pulses
In the lost and empty mind.

Wishing, dreaming, yearning;
Screaming, wailing, a sudden hush
As all worth living for has been destroyed,
Stripped from the aching heart
Because of the fierce, drawn out war.

Glazed looks reflect only
Horrific green and splattered red
That stain the once innocent sky
That remains quiet and subdued above.

Wandering in the black mists...
Drowning in the murky rivers...
Sleeping in the ashy meadows...

Lost forever more.
