This was an assignment for my American Literature class. After reading several Native American creation stories, we were to write our own creation story. I have such passion for music that my characters were based off of rock n roll legends.

The Origin of Rock n Roll - my creation story

In the beginning was the Spirit in the Sky, a creator of all marvelous things. He handcrafted the world and the animals to inhabit it. The sun, moon, and stars enveloped the Earth. He created two children for companionship – the eldest with good intentions, and the younger with wicked. The Spirit in the Sky named his children Elvis (eldest) and Ozzy (youngest). He gave his sons dominion over the inhabitants of the Earth and commanded them to dwell there. Upon their departure, he secretly advised his youngest, "Carry on my wayward son. There will be peace when you are done."

Earth was not populated with human beings; they were yet to come. The Animals were very special to the Spirit in the Sky, so he allowed them to live in harmony amongst themselves. There were many different tribes throughout the world – the Monkees made their homes in the jungle of Africa; the Lizard King and his relatives resided in the Sahara; the Eagles were seen flying over the Rockies; Grateful Bears danced near the Smoky Mountains; poor Def Leppard and his offspring roamed what is now Siberia; the entire clan of the Counting Crows loomed over the Korn fields of central North America; the godfather, Ratt, and his numerous godchildren were known for their architecture, and they built what is presently known as New York City; and sometimes at night you could see the Beatles and Crickets come out from their hiding places to socialize with all the other tribes. All of the Animals lived in peace until the Spirit unleashed his children upon them.

Elvis enjoyed living with the Animals of the Earth. He took every opportunity to show them love and kindness. He often taught them song and dance, instructing them on the proper way of shaking their hips. He did this so often that the Animals dubbed him "Elvis the Pelvis". At some point in the creation of Elvis, the Spirit in the Sky blessed him with the gift of making musical instruments out of Earthly resources. Often Elvis would teach the Animals how to make instruments for themselves. Because each instrument was crafted out of love, it possessed the loveliest sound. Leaves waltzed to the harmonies of the wood flutes. Nourishing rain pattered the soil when drums tapped. Rainbows frequently appeared by the angelic sounds of the harp. All together the instruments sent praises to the Spirit in the Sky, provoking joyful tears in Heaven. Elvis was most worthy of admiration in Heaven and on Earth for his amazing instruments.

Ozzy on the other hand lived a lonesome life on Earth, not having so many friends. Jealousy drove Ozzy to madness. He could no longer control his urge to wreak havoc. Sometimes he would get so angry that in his insanity he took his rage out on the Animals – those poor, poor Animals. He was known for biting the heads off of Bats, and once he bit the head off of a Dove and spat it as far as he could. Ozzy also created War Pigs out of harmless hams that wallowed in their own filth. He turned a holy day, the Sabbath which was set aside to praise the Spirit in the Sky, into a Black Sabbath. The most despicable crime was yet to come.

After hearing of his brother's esteem, Ozzy spent every moment planning the destruction of the "good" in musical instruments. He convinced the Flock of Seagulls and the Yardbirds to assist him in carrying out this evil task. Ozzy commanded them to place a Sweet Leaf in the ground contaminating the food for all of the inhabitants of the Earth. When all the Animals ate their hearty fare, the poisons sank into their blood corrupting all that was good. Not only did the Sweet Leaf change their character, it also changed their physical appearance. They slowly morphed into human beings. Their music began to reflect their new, sinful nature.

The Lizard King became Jim Morrison, delving himself into an uninhibited lifestyle of sex and drugs which later led to his demise. The Beatles slowly diminished leaving only four remaining: Paul, John, Ringo, and George. Their music was best described as helter-skelter causing riots throughout nations of the world. The Yardbirds were known for having sexual relations with other tribes. In their sinfulness was born the great Jimmy Page. He did what no other had done before using a bow on the strings of his guitar. The leader of the Crickets was Buddy Holly. Due to his ancestor's evil ways, he was cursed with a short life. He died in the crash of the Led Zeppelin. The Grateful Bears were led by Jerry Garcia who had the power to hypnotize others to follow him in all his wicked ways.

Many other horror stories can still be heard now and then about the Animals who morphed into wretched human beings, all intermingling and creating new tribes. Out of these new mixed races came such unforgettable musicians: Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, John Bonham, the Motley Crew, Roger Waters, the Allman Brothers, Jethro Tull, and Janis Joplin who was the first female on Earth. Even in their wickedness, the Spirit in the Sky allows them to ascend the Stairway to Heaven because of the balance they organized on Earth - a balance of good and evil.
