Recapby Rahul Menon

Loneliness is a curse. Even God must have created man to cope up with His loneliness. John knew this, as a fact.

John Prye was a person longing for a friend, colleague or even someone who could just listen to him talk out his feelings. Unfortunately, his dog is the closest thing to a “friend” he has.

He is a bachelor; a lonely one at that. Probably, because he is never comfortable around women or even ‘a’ woman. Even Montogomery (the dog), is unable to be a nice wingman for him.

He sat there, sitting on his usual place; the park bench; near the swings for children. Looking at the children play, unaware of the cut-throat world that is out there; would make anyone young at heart again. But for him this just bought back memories of a childhood that had been keeping him awake till 1 ‘o’ clock in the morning.

He shivered. Not because of the January wind, but because of the memories of his childhood did this to him every single time he thought about them. The atrocities that he faced in the godforsaken place they called an “orphanage”. He was always terrified of the heavy footsteps of the warden, the clinking of the utensils, the crying and the terrified shrieks of the children that were sent to the “closet” as a punishment. He prayed to God that one day he could get out of there and be free.

Maybe God is there!

Cause He heard him. He heard his prayer; although at the cost of a curse. The curse that he carried to this day with him.

He was lonely.

He sat there, pondering over his life. His mistakes. His……..

Love!

Love which he didn’t get. Love which he thought was his.

His body quivered.

Love which left him.

He knew that it was all gone. He was now a loner; just like a fallen leaf of a tree. With no sense of direction or purpose. He is the moon among suns. Blinded by their light and with no existence of its own. He was a burden on this earth.

This was his calling.

He stood up, as if with a resolve, to patch up his things. To be once again a part of a full grown tree. To be the moon, that guided the travelers in night and be the biggest among the heavenly stars. He wanted to feel love and happiness rather than the depressed thoughts of the past.

John Prye left; along with Montogomery. The recap was still there; in his mind, but only a portion of it. He left it with the park bench on which he sat a few minutes ago. He decided to never come back. Because he was a changed man now; with a belief and an aim. The children playing, no longer gave him shivers but instead made him realize how much short, this lifetime is. Time flies by and so do the memories.

The evening got darker. The moon came as soon as the children left for their respective homes. What remained there was a lingering feeling of loneliness that John had left there along with his fading memories of his childhood.
