Calla Sanchez was never popular.Compared to her twin sister Lindze, she was nobody. Wallpaper.
So how could nobody figure out that the blog called "The Life of Seventeen Year Old Wallpaper" belonged to her? She did such a good job at being antisocial, no one would have expected it to be from Calla.
But this isn't about Calla's Blog. The blog is just a minor detail in Calla's story. A minor detail that changed her life and the lives of others forever.

It's Personal: Calla's Story
By Nia Graham

INSIDE BLACK WALLED BEDROOM-EARLY MORNING

CALLA sits on her bed typing on her small purple laptop. CALLA writes an anonymous blog called It's Personal: The Life Of Seventeen Year Old Wallpaper.

LINDZE knocks on the door.

(BANG BANG)

LINDZE: Hurry up freak, we're gonna be late!

CALLA looks at the door and closes her laptop. She gets dressed and rides her bike to school. CALLA loves riding her bike because she loves the feeling of the wind flowing through her hair and the scenery.

INSIDE HIGH SCHOOL MAIN HALL - LATE MORNING

(SLAM)

CALLA slams her locker shut and walks to her class. She is stopped by her PRINCIPAL.

PRINCIPAL: Young lady, we do not slam lockers in this school.

CALLA: (grumbling) Sorry Mr. Watkins
Other students around them snicker. CALLA turns and glares at them. They scatter and CALLA hugs her textbooks tighter to her.

INSIDE HISTORY CLASSROOM- LATE MORNING

MRS. FERGUSON is reading from the textbook on the podium. CALLA scribbles in her notebook, half listening to her teacher. She is writing the rest of her blog post from that morning.

Behind her, mean girl MEGAN spits a spitball at the back of her neck. CALLA grips the edges of her desk and just barely misses spilling all of her books on the floor. She turns around and glares at the former. MEGAN smirks triumphantly and

CALLA looks back down on her desk. She pulls out a red notebook. It is tattered and pages are nearly falling out of it. It is
CALLA's list notebook. She opens it to the last page. It is titled Calla Sanchez's Rules to Survive this HELL called LIFE.

CALLA: (whispers as she's writing)Rule number Two, Know this: All girls named Megan are EVIL!

CALLA closes her notebook and smiles.

OUTSIDE BACK OF SCHOOL- EARLY AFTERNOON

(LEAVES RUSTLING)

CALLA climbs a tall thick oak tree behind the school. It is lunch time, and this is where she eats. She slings her messenger bag on the branch above her and pulls out her Tupperware container. Inside it are five pieces of sushi and two plump dumplings. CALLA loves Japanese food. She turns on her iPod and suddenly Skrillex is pounding in her ears.

(SKRILLEX'S "SCARY MONSTERS AND NICE SPRITES" BEGINS TO PLAY)

She eats her lunch in peace and pulls out her laptop.

CALLA: Finally I can finish this post. Peace and quiet and no rude family members annoying me.

She pulls out her notebook and finishes her blog post. She logs into the school's Wi-Fi network and posts it on her site. Almost five minutes later she sees that she's gotten ten comments on it.

CALLA:(gasps) Wow. Ten already! Let's see, oh...

CALLA sees a comment from JOSH MARTEN, a football player, and one of the most popular boys in school.

CALLA:(quietly) Not all girls named Megan are evil. The one I'm dating has her moments though.

CALLA stares at the laptop for a few seconds, then clicks the word 'reply' under JOSH's comment. She types in a quick reply and closes the laptop.

CALLA: (thinking) Josh Marten commented on my blog. That must mean he likes it. Does he like me?

CALLA: (out loud) No stupid. You're writing the blog anonymously, so he wouldn't even know it's you. Besides, you don't want a boyfriend, remember? Especially not a jock.

CALLA remembers when she'd first started writing her rules of surviving life. The very first rule she'd written was to never fall in love with a jock. Since middle school, it was the only one she hadn't changed. There were only five.

(SCHOOL BELL RINGING)

The bell rings. She puts everything back into her bag and climbs back down the tree.

(THUD OF HEAVY LEATHER BOOTS HITTING THE GROUND)

She brushes the leaves off of her silky blood-red dress and runs inside, the JANITOR waiting with the back door open. CALLA hands her a five and runs to her class.

CHEMISTRY LAB- LATE AFTERNOON

(PAPERS RUSTLING)

MR. WILLIAMS is handing out worksheets for the class's lab assignment. CALLA  is doodling in her notebook, waiting for MR.
WILLIAMS to hand out partners. Her ears perked up when she heard her name and... JOSH MARTEN. CALLA scrambled to get all of her notebooks back into her bag and JOSH approaches her table. She let her long black curls fall into her eyes.

JOSH:(cheerfully) Hi Calla.

CALLA: (quietly, reluctantly) Hello.

JOSH stares at her and smiles. JOSH is a friendly boy. CALLA stares down at her notebook for the rest of class and gave small grunts as replies to Josh's questions.

IN HER MOTHER'S CAR- LATE AFTERNOON

(CAR ENGINE REVVING)

LINDZE: Why do you always get to drive?

CALLA: Because unlike you, I don't drive like a freaking maniac, and I don't strike fear into the hearts of pedestrians.

LINDZE:(glares at CALLA)I don't drive like a maniac!

CALLA: Says the girl who wrecked the car three times and got her driving privileges taken away.

LINDZE and CALLA sulk the rest of the way home.

CALLA'S BEDROOM- EARLY EVENING

CALLA is sleeping soundly, hugging her plush dog and breathing softly. There is a soft knocking at her door and it opens to reveal her ten year old brother CHARLY.

CHARLY: Calla, Mom and Dad said to wake up cuz dinner's ready. Calla?

CHARLY walked over to CALLA and pushed her shoulder lightly. CALLA opens one eye and glares at CHARLY.

CHARLY: Mom and dad said dinner's ready.

CALLA: I'll be there in five minutes.

CHARLY: (rolling his eyes)

You don't have to put on your creepy Addams Family makeup to eat dinner with us.

CALLA: (glaring) Go. Now.

CHARLY runs out of the room. CALLA sits up and looks at herself in the mirror.

CALLA: (scoffing) Morticia Addams could never make this look good.

CALLA re-applies her makeup and walks downstairs to dinner.

(LOW THUD OF BARE FEET HITTING WOODEN STAIRS)

LINDZE laughs at her and CHARLY rolls his eyes again. CALLA narrows her eyes and walks back to her room. MOTHER runs after her.

(LOW THUD OF FEET HITTING STAIRS)

MOTHER: Calla! Come back down here please.

CALLA: No! Why should I eat with people who think I'm a joke!

MOTHER: Sweetheart, we don't think you're a joke. Lindze didn't mean anything by it. She-

CALLA abruptly opens her door.

CALLA: No, Mother, she meant everything by it.

(BAM)

CALLA slams her door shut.

OUTSIDE SCHOOL CAFETERIA- EARLY AFTERNOON

CALLA sees JOSH and looks away. He's been trying to talk to her all day, but she's been looking away or walking in the other
direction. The JANITOR is sick, so she is looking for a place to sit. There are no trees near the cafeteria and all the tables are full. She finds an empty table and runs to it. She sighs and sits down and pulls out her lunch. Today it is mochi and miso soup. She happily eats until she feels something splatter across her back.

(LOUD WET SPLAT) CALLA gasps.

 Another splatter.

(SPLAT)

CALLA jumps and her lunch falls on the floor. She ignores it and grabs her bag. She looks up and sees LINDZE and her five of her friends along with Megan holding water balloons.

LINDZE: Ready, and fire!

CALLA screams and tries to shield herself with her arms as she is pelted with the balloons.

(LOUD SPLATTERS AND SCREAMS)

CALLA is shaking. She looks up and they are gone. She gets up, lips trembling with tears in her eyes. People stopped and some ask her if she needs help, some laugh at her.

(LOUD LAUGHTER AND PEOPLE TALKING IN THE BACKGROUND)

MR. WILLIAMS reaches out for CALLA but she walks away from him. She walks to her locker and slumps to the ground crying.

(LOW THUD OF A BODY HITTING THE FLOOR AND LOUD SOBBING)

JOSH walks into the main building to see CALLA on the floor covered in paint and crying.

JOSH: (quietly) Calla?

CALLA looks up at him and puts her head back down into her arms. JOSH pulls her up off of the floor and hugs her tightly.

JOSH: I'm sorry. I just broke up with her, and I saw her talking to your sister earlier. I should have said something to you.

CALLA looks up at him and half smiles.

CALLA: It's not your fault. Lindze is absolutely convinced that I'm a freak of nature; she probably would have done it with or without Megan.

JOSH: (shaking his head) That's horrible.

CALLA shakes her head and goes into the girls' bathroom to inspect the damage.

(DOOR SQUEAKS OPEN AND SLAMS SHUT)

Her dress is ruined. Streaks of neon pink paint covered her dress. Her dark curls now resemble a lion's mane, if that lion were
to be a pink- obsessed cyber Goth. The paint had somehow missed her face; it was all over her chest and neck.

CALLA grimaces and punches the mirror.

(GLASS MIRROR BREAKS)

She feels nothing, but her knuckles are bleeding. She hates pink almost as much as she hates Megan. She runs outside to her bike when JOSH pulls up in his van beside her.

(ENGINE REVING)

JOSH: I'll drive you home if you want.

CALLA thinks for a few seconds, sticking her tongue into the side of her cheek, then puts her bike on the back of the van.

(SOUNDS OF BIKE BUMPING BACK OF VAN)

INTERIOR OF JOSH'S VAN-LATE AFTERNOON

CALLA is scratching her arm and JOSH is driving. Both of them are silent. CALLA glances at him. JOSH glances at her. He smiles at her.

JOSH: I like your blog.

CALLA is surprised. She writes her blog anonymously and is surprised that he figured out it was her.

CALLA: How did you know it was me?

JOSH: (chuckles lightly) Only a person who isolates them as much as you do has that much to say.

CALLA: Thanks, I think.

INTERIOR OF CALLA'S BATHROOM- LATE AFTERNOON

CALLA has a towel around her waist combing her dark hair. JOSH is downstairs explaining to Calla's parents what happened.

MOTHER: (muffled through the door) I understand. We'll have a talk with her when she gets home. How's Calla?

JOSH: (also muffled) I think she's okay. She was crying earlier, but then again, how would you feel if your sister got a bunch of her friends to help her throw paint-filled water balloons at you?

CALLA presses her ear against the door. She strains to hear the conversation.

MOTHER: If it was me, I'd probably have cried too.

FATHER: I can't believe Lindze would do this to her. I thought they were getting along.

CALLA: (thinking) Getting along, my ass.

INTERIOR LIVING ROOM- EARLY EVENING

CALLA and JOSH are sitting in the big black couch across from Calla's parents. LINDZE is standing in the doorway of the kitchen, glaring.

FATHER: We just want to know why you did it.

LINZDE is silent, focusing her glare on CALLA. CALLA is polishing her nails blood red.

MOTHER: (stammering) There must be an explanation for this behavior. You didn't think of this out of the blue, you had help. Please Lindze, tell us why you did this.

LINDZE walks into the living room and sighs dramatically.

LINDZE: Well mother, I decided that Calla is too depressing and gloomy and that her clothing choices are hideously ugly. So I asked my friends to buy pink paint and balloons so we could brighten up her life, if you catch my drift.

CALLA grinds her teeth together and balls her hands into fists, ignoring the nail polish smearing on her hands.

(SOUND OF KNUCKLES CRACKING)

FATHER: (slowly and ominously) So, you're telling us that you think it is excusable to embarrass you sister in front of your peers because you don't like her clothing? That's what you're saying?

LINDZE: (sighs) I didn't say it was excusable, daddy. I just said she had a problem and I wanted to fix it.

CALLA jumps up off the couch and slaps LINDZE across the face.

(LOUD SLAP)

The wet nail polish smears across her face. Their father holds CALLA back as she goes in for a second blow.

CALLA: I think in this house, you're the one with the problem. A normal sister would talk to her parents about her sister's problems, not throw paint at her because her clothing is ugly and they're not preppy little robots that shop at Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch just because there are shirtless guys on the shopping bags!

CALLA wrenches herself out of her father's grip and runs to her room. She opens her laptop and goes to her blog. She starts a new post and doesn't stop typing until she's finished. She smiles, and the camera zooms in to reveal the words: "Rules to Survive this HELL called LIFE

1. Never fall in love with a jock. (Worst thing you could ever do yourself.)
2. All girls named Megan are evil. (Megan from my school, Megan Parker from that stupid Drake and Josh show, Megan Faux- I mean Fox, even though her character was possessed by a demon, but demons are scary, for real. :/ -)
3. Brad Fidel is a musical genius. (If you do not believe me, buy the albums from The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.)
4. If your sister claims she embarrasses you because you have problems, embarrass her EVERY chance you get, trust me, it's so worth it."

She sets the post to private, because she doesn't want JOSH to see it. This is because earlier in her notebook, she had written

"I think I'm falling in love with Josh."

THREE MONTHS LATER-SENIOR PROM- EARLY EVENING

CALLA and JOSH have been dating for two months. CALLA has become good friends with Josh's younger sister FLEUR and many of Josh's close friends. LINDZE and her friends now avoid her. Calla doesn't mind. She likes it this way.

CALLA and JOSH along with a group of friends all climb out of the shiny snow-white stretch limousine. Calla is tightly gripping Josh's arm, the mermaid bodice of her black chiffon and red lace dress hugging her curvy figure tightly, the red lace train fanning out behind her like a very ornate mermaid tail. Many of her peers gasp as she walks past them. They are in awe. Calla Sanchez was not only attached to Josh Marten, but her skin was glowing, her usually heavily- lined eyes only showed a subtle outline of a dark purple, and her false lashes made her piercing green eyes pop. In her stylish up-do, compliments of Fleur, there were sprigs of heliotrope flowers and pure white gardenias. She was a vision. For once in her life, people smiled at her.

Even MR. WATKINS, who usually scolded her for slamming her locker shut, wore a wide smile on his face.

CALLA: I've never gotten this much attention before.

JOSH: You've never detached yourself from the wall before either.

CALLA: (laughing) That's true. I'm glad I finally did. Thanks Josh.

JOSH leans over and softly kisses her. They both come up smiling. The camera zooms into a corner to reveal MEGAN, scowling. A slow song begins to play and CALLA pulls JOSH onto the dance floor.

(SINEAD O CONNOR'S "WHEN YOU LOVE" BEGINS TO PLAY)

They begin to dance, other dancers beginning to follow their lead. Calla smiles up at Josh and he smiles back. This is the best night of her life.

The camera cuts back to Megan, who has been joined by LINDZE. Lindze hands her something and whispers in her ear.

Camera zooms into Megan's face, a slow Grinch-like smile spreading across her face.

A WEEK LATER- EARLY MORNING

CALLA and JOSH are walking to her locker, hand in hand. They see flyers all over the lockers and pluck one off of Calla's locker. The flyer reads, "The Life of Seventeen Year Old Wallpaper, By CALLA SANCHEZ."

Calla's hands are shaking. Josh's friends are storming down the hall towards them. In Calla's eyes, they are a stampede ready to trample them. A blonde girl named MEGAN DAVIS grabs Calla by the collar of her dress.

MEGAN D.: What's this about all girls named Megan being evil Calla?! Am I evil too?

CALLA: (voice shaking) I-I- (swallows) I never meant that towards you!

MEGAN D.: Then who was it meant towards?

CALLA: Megan Kelley. She's always been rude to me. I'd never say anything mean about you.

A jock named CARLO hands JOSH another flyer.

CARLO: See what your girlie used to think about you man.

The flyer reads: 'Never fall in love with a jock. (Worst thing you could ever do yourself.)'

JOSH looks at CALLA, his blue eyes filled with pain. Calla shakes her head and runs out of the building. She points the key to her mother's car and wrenches the door open. She does 60 the whole way home.

BLACK WALLED BEDROOM-LATE MORNING

CALLA bursts into her room. The purple laptop is sitting neatly on her bed, with LINDZE sitting on the corner of her bed.

CALLA: (angrily) Get out of my room Lindze.

LINZDE: You mean your bat cave?

CALLA is beyond exasperated and throws her messenger bag at LINDZE. It hits her square in the arm and leaves a big red mark. Lindze runs out of the room.

LINDZE:(fading) Enjoy your infamy freak!

CALLA collapses on her bed and begins to cry.

SENIOR GRADUATION- EARLY EVENING

MR. WATKINS is reading the names of the seniors and handing them a handshake and a diploma. CALLA is shaking everywhere. She is absolutely terrified of getting up on the stage in front of all of her peers. She has no clue what they'll do here. For the past month, they've been throwing rotten tomatoes at her, they egged her house and her mom's car, stole her clothing out of the locker room and sabotaged her chemistry assignment, which consequently got her an F, until she'd begged Mr. Williams for a make-up assignment.

(FLAHSBACKS)

MR. WATKINS: Calla Sanchez.

CALLA slowly stands up. Her peers begin to boo her, all except for JOSH and FLEUR, whom she'd been avoiding.

(LOUD BOOS AND JEERS)

She rubs her arms as if she's cold, whereas her cheeks are burning. She walks up to the stage and the booing gets louder.

(LOUDER BOOING)

Instead of a handshake, MR. WATKINS hands her a diploma and a sad smile.

(SHOUTS AND INSULTS CARRY ACROSS THE AUDITORIUM)

CALLA drops her diploma and runs out of the room. Her tolerance has reached its breaking point.

Somehow, she's able to run all the way home. Somehow, she finds the right key to get into the house. She walks upstairs to her parent's bedroom and opens their medicine cabinet. She takes her mother's pills, the ones for her heart problems.

She walks into her room and turns on her laptop. She turns on her webcam and clicks record.

CALLA: This is a message for everyone who booed me off the stage at graduation. You've been torturing me for the past month. Why? Because of something I said about you in a blog? I only said those things because you were rude to me, or talked smack about me. Some of you probably only booed me because your friends were doing it. Well you know what? You've pushed me over the edge.

CALLA raises her arms to show her cutting scars.

CALLA: See, ever since that bitch Megan spread my blog posts all over the school, I've been cutting myself to try to bleed out the pain.

CALLA reaches over and presses play on her stereo.

(LINKIN PARK'S "BLEED IT OUT" BEGINS TO PLAY)

CALLA: Because of you all, I wanted to die. Because of you, I've been ignoring my boyfriend and the only other friend I have left. Well you know what, guys? You're finally getting your wish.

CALLA shows the camera her mother's pills.

CALLA: I stole these from my mom. She's got a weak heart. I figure if I take enough I'll die before they get home. They don't care about me anyway. They're probably at the after party, laughing with you. How pathetic that their middle child gets booed off the stage at her own graduation.

With tears running down her face, CALLA swallows two pills.

CALLA: Look guys, I'm one step closer to dying.

(THE STEREO PLAYS LINKIN PARK'S "ONE STEP CLOSER")

AN HOUR LATER- LATE EVENING

CALLA has swallowed eight pills. She's drinking coffee, trying to stay awake.

CALLA: (slurring) Y'know... I never thought people would even hate me so much. Why is it that now you know who wrote the blog, you all are so angry? All youse are... are hippopotamus... I mean hypocrites.

FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER-LATE EVENING

CALLA has swallowed ten pills. She is lying in front of her laptop. Her eyes are closed and she's extremely pale.

CALLA: (very softly, almost inaudible) I think this is it guys. I think I'm dead. Bye guys.

CALLA opens her eyes one last time and presses 'stop recording' on her webcam. She takes two deep breaths and her whole body untenses. She's dead.

THREE HOURS LATER- EARLY TWILIGHT

LINDZE is sitting on the floor of the living room, her hair is a mess. CHARLY is sitting on the couch in fetal position, watching the paramedics carry Calla's body away. Their parents are in the entrance of the house crying. Police cars and news vans surround the house.

Calla's video has gone viral.

ONE YEAR LATER

CHARLY and LINDZE are sitting on Calla's old bed making a video. It's been a year since graduation. Since Calla took her own life. Charly and Lindze have been writing a blog together called, We Miss You Sis. Their parents have divorced and Charly lives with their mother. Lindze lives in an apartment with FLEUR. JOSH has gone off to college to major in psychology. He chooses to stay single, and is no longer talking to any of his friends from high school. He now keeps to himself, but regularly volunteers at a children's hospital near his college. In his dorm room, he still has all of his pictures of him and Calla. He also has a love note she had written to him after prom.
The school has turned Calla's locker into a memorial for her, a picture of her in her prom dress and many sprigs of heliotropes and gardenias. It was the one night she had truly shined.
