The Gingerbread Gypsy
Once upon a time when the land was all water and the trees were plants there lived a little gypsy gingerbread man. He lived under a very small flower at the bottom of a lovely English garden. The garden was like something out of a fairytale, colourful flowers decking either side of the pathway and clinging ivy climbing so high up the old house that it could almost touch the sky!
The gingerbread man had no friends and had travelled all his life in search of a better one. He was very shy and only came out in the early morning to pick berries, just before the milkman came on his rounds. He would sit all day and eat berries. His only other pastime was to watch the people passing by as they went up and down the garden path. Quite a lonesome pastime. However, one day, he was in for quite an adventure!
It was early one morning and as usual the little gingerbread gypsy was out picking berries and smiling. Suddenly from nowhere a large bee flew down from the sky and took a small bite out of his right hand. The poor frightened gingerbread man ran for cover and dived down a hole underneath a cherry tree. He stayed there for 5 days, petrified that the bee would still be looking for him. Once he plucked up the courage to come out of the hole, he realised that the bee had long since gone and he was relieved. The gingerbread man continued his practice of picking berries until suddenly one day, as he was picking berries of course, a large cat leapt from the bushes and clawed at the poor little gingerbread man and he surely would have died had the milkman not disturbed the cat with the clinking of milk bottles.
Due to these recent events and brushes with death, the gypsy gingerbread man decided to leave the garden that had once held him in safety and comfort and continued to wander looking for happiness. Unfortunately on one sad day many years later, he went picking berries and stumbled across a bee. This time it ate more than his hand.
And so ends this sad tale of a lonesome gypsy gingerbread man who never found the happiness he deserved. We hope he is picking berries somewhere in that great orchard in the sky.
