I could never have known how far we'd go
To the end of the earth and beyond a stone's throw
A letter received, slipped under our door
As the rain pattered down from the glass to the floor
With Ellie's hand on my arm, together we read
The message that left the answer unsaid

"As I watch the tiny currents of water run aimlessly down your window panes, my cheek begins to mirror this image. I see you Elizabeth, I really see you, like no one else can. He may tell you that he sees the world in your eyes, a blue so deep that words cannot describe it, but I see the truth Ellie, the pain, the love, the tears, the fears, all of your being keeps growing so near. Our hearts and our minds intertwine like a python’s constriction; you just don’t know it yet. This affliction is close to tearing me apart, so I must act quick if I am to quench my torn heart. I didn’t think this is how it would end when all this began, but if I can’t have you Ellie, then no one can.”

The sound of silence fell over the room
A vacuum of space left us feeling consumed
The anger I felt, engulfing my heart
Was replaced with a sense of falling apart
What did this mean? What do I do?
My eyes flickered faster as my mind went askew
Time seemed distorted, soon coming to a stop
Despite the hands moving faster on our grandfather clock
That home we knew no longer exists
A fractured reality built on memory twists
While I stared at the cracks in the crumbling wall
Recalling the promise that I made in the fall
“Never let go” was something I meant
We were lighter than air, now we start our descent.
