He Walks with War

Inspired by Lord Byron’s “She Walks in Beauty”

He walks with war, like the dampness

Of mourning’s mist and rising rays;

The best of dare and of repress

Join in his facet and his gaze;

Thus numb to that traumatic stress

Which sepia terrain masks with haze.

The heavy dust, the skinny hue,

Had half broken the dark hero

That scars like the ink in tattoos

Or ignites like the wild willow;

Where he once sat, but since outgrew

Its grand throne and female fellow.

But in his strong eyes, and smudged brow,

So firm, so tough, yet impotent,

The laughs that fool, the hands endow,

But tell of memoirs unopened,

A mind trapped in an endless vow,

A heart in deep need of amend.
