Part 1 – The way it is
My name is John Mathers and I am a student at Ross Private Academy for the gifted. People who have select skills come here and taught to improve these skills. I personally have a way with how I write in my note book. Everything I write seems to come to life for me and it is interesting to me. Other people see me as weird because I am always writing something in my book and I ignore their comments about me. The only person who really never judges me is my best friend, a simple girl named Rosaline. She is here because she is amazing with music.
I am about six feet tall and I am just a skinny kid that does not matter. I am pale because I am usually in the shade writing in my book. I just like to let everything disappear around me and let my world be built as I wrote. I have black hair and my eyes are a light grey that just catch the people into a conversation with me. I like to wear cargo shorts and a simple t-shirt that never stuck out of a crowd.
“So what are you writing today?” I was sitting under a tree during lunch and had my book and pen in my lap. Rosaline sat down next to me and smiled
Rosaline is a beautiful girl to most people but I see her as perfect because I truly know her as a person. She has light brown hair, green eyes, caramel skin, and she wears tank tops with jeans. She is about three inches shorter then me and has the figure of an athlete. She has a scar on her left cheek from one boyfriend in her life that just couldn’t keep his hands to himself. I can honestly say that I liked it when I made him stop touching her.
“I am writing a short story about a girl who interrupts my train of thought.” She laughed a little at me and smiled.
“Well did you mention her good looks and the fact that she sees you as her best friend?” She moved my hand and looked at the notebook.
“So it’s a poem, Birds of High School?” I nodded and looked over to a group of kids in black outfits sitting at a lunch table.
“They gave me the idea.” She laughed a little and read the poem.
“Not bad. You are getting better with your work.” I smiled and nodded a little.
“Thanks, I like to know that I sucked before this.” She groaned and shoved me a little.
“Stop being a pessimist.” I laughed and looked at her.
“So what’s up, Rosaline?” She thought about it and sighed.
“The sky, clouds, space, and also Brian asked me to the Winter Dance, again.” I laughed a little and thought about it.
“What did you say?” She looked at the ground and I punched her arm.
“You should have said no.” She sighed and thought about it.
“I just wanted him to stop stalking me like that.” I thought about it and looked at her.
“I could handle him like Jason.” She shook her head.
“We don’t need you to get more on your police record for something like that.” I nodded and thought about it.
“I don’t care.” She laughed and took my notebook.
“Well I can tell you care because you wrote a song about a week ago about it.” I laughed and took the book back.
“Well that was in my book from last week. I finished it, remember?” She shook her head and I sighed. Then the bell rang and it was time to make my way to fourth period.
“Alright I will talk to you after school.” She nodded and I started walking to class. I kept walking and thought about what to do. I was walking towards the science building where I would have my last class of the day. Then I heard the voice.
“Do you want to protect her?” I turned around and I didn’t see anyone there.
“Does she make you protective and you can’t help but think of hurting anyone who could harm her?” The voice seemed to be coming from every where and I turned around looking for it. People saw me and I knew what they were thinking.
“What if I told you that I can give you the ability to protect her without having to use your own strength?” I kept looking around and then I heard another voice.
“John, you okay?” I turned around and saw my friend Karl looking at me like I was crazy.
Karl is about five inches taller then me and is becoming a body builder for football. He has blonde hair, pale skin, blue eyes, and has a gift of making people happy with a smile. He is here because our football team really needs him. We became friends because I tutored him for money and we got to know each other.
“Yeah I’m fine let’s go to class.” We walked into the science building and then the voice returned.
“What if I could promise you the ability to protect everyone you hold close to your heart?” I looked around and Karl noticed.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” I looked at him and smiled.
“Yeah I think I am just hearing things.” He laughed a little.
“Well don’t go crazy yet because I need your help to pass Chemistry.” I laughed and we kept walking. Then I heard it one more time.
“I can give you the greatest gift you could ask for.” I looked behind me and for a second I saw a dark figure that was standing at the end of the hallway. Then it disappeared in a split second.
“John, get in to class.” I turned back around to see Ms. Rays. She was my chemistry teacher and pretty much the only person who kept me on track with school work. I walked into the classroom but my mind was still stuck on that dark figure.
After the Chemistry lesson of the day we waited for the bell to ring and for the moment we could leave. While I waited I decided to close my eyes and go to sleep. When I slept I had a dream which bothered me for the rest of my life.
I was standing on a hill with and everything was below me. I saw cities, towns and my school. All of them sitting around the base of the hill and then I heard the voice.
“So would you take the deal if I offer it to you?” I turned around and the dark figure stood there. It was in the shape of a person but it was all black with no features that stood out to me.
“What?” It laughed a little.
“If you could be given the power to do what you wanted and protect everyone you loved would you take it?” I thought about it and looked him over one more time.
“Yeah I would take that deal.” It laughed and put its hand out to me.
“Then we have an agreement?” I thought about it and just thought I was going crazy.
“Yeah.” I shook his hand and then he disappeared and I was left holding my notebook and a pen.
Suddenly the world changed around me and I was standing next to my body at my desk. My body was shaking rapidly and foam was pouring out of my mouth. It turned red slowly from mixing with blood. I was having a seizure and no one knew what to do. Suddenly my body stopped moving and I felt something break between me and everyone else. I felt my soul break away from the rest of my body. I knew this feeling instantly was death.
“You know have the power to do what you want but the price for such power can only be your physical form.” I didn’t know how to respond.
