I sit on the step at the front of the house, drinking my honey and lemon tea and look out across the lawn. The sun is high today, glowing against a cherry blue sky and the wind is light against my skin, only ticking my face where my hair falls. This is my morning. This is a perfect welcome to a new day.
From where I am I can see my neighbour Dale sitting on the front porch. I should be concerned about only wearing my summer PJ’s, but I’m too relaxed to move and I doubt he will take much notice of me soaking up a little alone time.
I on the other hand can’t help looking over at him. Dale is hiding behind his morning paper as he always does. Sure to be reading the business columns, though I would like to imagine it to be the horoscopes, or maybe he's secretly laughing at the cartoons filling the space near the back.
Dale has been struggling lately. His hands are so old and tired that he calls upon his wife, Sue to help turn the pages for him. Though rather than yell out to her he taps his silver spoon against his teacup, sounding more like a clumsy accident than a purpose clank!
I adjust my view and hide behind my steaming mug now nestle between my hands, as Sue comes out of the house to carter to him.
Sue is a little younger than him. I’d put her in her 60’s, but she has great skin and perfect posture, not to mention keeping her slim figure. She turns the page of his paper and smiles at him, a loving glance, a wife to her husband. He thanks her and she puts her lips to his forehead. It’s a perfect show of affection and for me a silent comfort.
