Get Out of the Rain

It’s raining. I thought. Well, it’s not uncommon for it to rain here in Washington. But I still loved the rain. I walked into my bathroom and put my curly brown hair into a ponytail. I didn’t put on any make up since I didn’t want it running down my face later. I went over to my closet and slipped on jeans and a purple long-sleeved top. I grabbed a blanket and an apple on my way out of my apartment.

I walked down the street to a small park. The park was built almost 70 years ago and was falling apart. No one went there even if it wasn’t raining. But I loved this park. It was my hiding spot from the world. I laid the blanket down on the open grass and stretched out on it. I laid there and felt the rain beat down on my face. It was calming to me. I closed my eyes and started to day dream.

“What the hell are you doing out here in this rain?” A man’s voice said.

I didn’t open my eyes when I responded, “What are you doing out here?”

“I was walking by and I saw you. Now answer my question. What are you doing out here?” he sounded more annoyed now.

“The rain is soothing.” I told him.

“You could get sick, get out of this rain,” he said.

“Look,” I said fiercely and sat up and opened my eyes. I was momentarily stunned by his looks. He was really cute. But I continued, “Look, it’s my life. Who cares if I get a little sick or lay out in the rain. You worry about your own life and don’t tell me how to live mine.”

He put his hands up in defense, “Wow, I’m not telling you how to live your life, darling. I’m just looking out for you.”

I’m just looking out for you. Those words were too familiar. It’s been 10 years since I’d heard those words. I hadn’t heard those six words together since I was nine. When parents ever told me no, they always said those words after.

I reached up and ran my hand under my eyes catching a tear. I closed my eye and tried to slow my breathing, which had turned into sobs. I tried to run my hands through my hair but it was in a hair tie, so I pulled it out. I ran my hands through it and pulled it down in front of my face. I dint want this stranger to know I was crying.

“Hey are you okay?” he asked me. He stepped closer. I turned my head so my hair fell like a curtain between us.

“I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not. Come on; I’ll get you a cup of coffee.” He said he held down his hand to me. I turned my head slightly to examine his hand, but I took it and stood up. “I’m Daniel, by the way.” He bent down and picked up my blanket.

“Well, it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Daniel said. I let him wrap an arm around me as we walked the block to the Starbucks. We didn’t talk on the way there. We order two coffees and Daniel pays for mine. We sat down at a table with our coffees. I look at him over my coffee. He has light brown hair that flips to the side just above his pale blue eyes. He takes a sip and makes a disgusted face.

“Why did you get coffee if you don’t like it?” I asked him.

“I wanted to impress you, I guess.” He said and I giggled. He’s kind of cute.

“So, tell me about yourself.”

He made a funny expression like he was thinking. Then he said, “My name is Daniel. I am 20 years old and in college currently. I have one sister, Lauran. She is 17 and in high school. I’m a Virgo. My favorite color is blue. I love eating anything in general-“

“But coffee,” I interrupt.

“It’s your turn now.”

“I’m Taylor. I’m 19 and also in college. I’m a Capricorn. My favorite color is purple. And my favorite food is ice cream.” I said.

“You don’t have any siblings?” Daniel asked. He propped his elbows up on the table and leaned forward.

“Um, no.” I said. Well, it’s kind of true. I don’t have any siblings now. My mom was 8 months pregnant when she died. “I have to go, sorry.”

“Wait, I want to see you again. Can I see your phone?” Daniel asked. Against my better judgment, I gave it to him. “I put my number in it and sent a text to my phone so now I have your number. It was a pleasure to meet you. See you soon, darling.”

I took my phone and walked out and in to the rain. I like being called darling by him. When it came out of those perfect lips it sounded wonderful.

The next morning at 10, I got a text from Daniel.

“Do you want to come over and watch some movies with me?” and at the bottom was an address.

I quickly typed, “Sure. Be there in 20.” I looked down at what I was wearing. I was in grey sweats and a blue sweatshirt. If he still likes me in this then I’ll know he’s a good guy. I slipped on some slippers. I drove to his place it was a small most likely two bedroom house. I sat in my car about to chicken out. I can do this it’s just a movie. I went up to the door and knocked. Daniel opened it. He was in green plaid pj bottoms and a matching blue sweatshirt. Our blue sweatshirts were for the University of Washington.

He smiled and said, “We match.” I rolled my eyes and walked in. There was a black couch to the left of me and I flopped down on it. A buzzer went off. “That’s popcorn. I’ll be right back.” He left the room. I looked around. There was a flat screen TV in the center. He had two book shelves. One was filled with book and had a row for just textbooks. The other was filled with movies. I walked over to it and looked through it. There were comedies, dramas, horrors, action, and romance movies. I picked out Dirty Dancing and sat back down on the couch.

“What do you have there, darling?” Daniel asked as he fell back onto the couch with the popcorn.

Dirty Dancing?” I asked.

“Sure, that’s my sister’s favorite movie. You two are too much alike.” He said and laughed. He grabbed the movie and popped it in. He sat back down, this time closer to me. I could hear him singing along at the beginning. That is so cute. Why does he have to be so adorable?

We watched the movie with both of us singing along to every song. We even got into a popcorn war. Finally, it got to the scene when Johnny and Baby kiss. I shiver as I see them kiss and feel Daniel’s arm brushing against mine.

He leans over and grabs a blanket. He spreads it over me and him, and then he puts his arm around me and pulls my head onto his chest. I could hear his heartbeat under my ear. I sigh with content. I looked up so his blues eyes met my brown ones. He leaned down and we heard the door slam shut.

“Danny?” A female voice said. Is that his girlfriend? If he has a girlfriend, why would he invite me over? If he is cheating on her with me, will she like attack me? She even has a pet name for him. He probably really likes her, but if he does why am I here?

“Lauran, you better have a really good reason for being here.” Daniel or “Danny” said harshly. Lauran, that sounds familiar. He mentioned her before. But who is she? Oh, she is his sister.

I turn around to see a tall, blonde girl. She is wearing a pink dress and has a white bow in her hair. She reminded me of legally blonde.

“Mom and dad are fighting, so I wanted to stay here for a bit. Why are you watching-“She looked at me, “Oh, sorry, well I just be in the other room pretend I’m not here.” She started to walk backwards. She’s kinda funny.

“Lauran you can stay and watch it with us if you’d like,” He said half-heartedly. She smiled and walked around and sat down next to me. I sat up and off of Daniel.

“I’m Lauran, Danny’s sister.” She said. She looked at me expectantly.

“I’m Taylor. It’s nice to meet you. Now shhh. I really want to watch this movie.”

After the movie was over, Daniel went into the kitchen and started making us lunch. I could smell him cooking quesadillas. Lauran and I were in a conversation about the movie when Daniel called from the kitchen, “Lauran, can Taylor borrow one of your swing dresses you have here?”

“Um, sure, but why?” she asked. I was curious too.

“I want to take Taylor to the swing dance class tonight,” he walked around the corner and looked at me and said, “If you want to go with me?”

“Um, sure I guess, I’ll go.” What is a swing dance class?

“Great.” We ate lunch and talked. I really liked them both. But I like Daniel a bit more, for obvious reasons. He was just so nice and funny; he being hot is just a bonus.

Lauran and I were in her room here. In her closet she a small section for dresses. She told me that I could pick out any of them to wear. I picked out a simple light pink dress. The dress was a perfect fit, but the shoes she let me barrow were a bit big.

I let my hair fall down into natural perfect ringlets. Lauran couldn’t stop telling me how pretty I looked, but I didn’t totally believe her. We walked out to the living room to find Daniel. He was wearing a white button down shirt and black slacks. Never had I seen a man look any sexier that he did right then.

“You ready?” he asked. I nodded and he grabbed my hand and we left.

The class was so fun. I loved that he had to hold me so close. I went to sleep with butterflies in my tummy.

Over the next two months, the rain didn’t let up and I spent my days hanging out with Daniel. We are just friends though. We watched movie together. One day we went to an art showing for an artist we have never even heard of. Today is October 2nd. It is the first day since two months ago, where you could see the sun. It was clear and sunny.

Daniel showed up at my door with a picnic basket. We went down to the old park and sat down.

“Today is the day I moved to Washington 10 years ago.” I told him. I can tell him.

“Well, I’m glad you did move down here. So, why did you move?” he asked.

“I moved in with my aunt after my parents died and she lives here.”

“I’m sorry. How did it happen?”

“They both worked in the world trade center. They died in 9/11. I was at school and it was just another normal day till I heard.” I said and tried to smile, but I could feel my eyes getting filled up with tears.

He pulled me over to him and placed my head on his chest. He held me tight as a few tears escaped my eyes. He stroked my hair till I calmed down. He didn’t let go just yet. His white v neck felt soft against my cheek.

I let his arm drop and so did my heart. I got up and straightened my blue sundress. Daniel sat up and put on his black slipper like shoes. He rolled up his grey skinny jeans to just above his ankle and then he stood up as well.

I opened my mouth to finally tell him how I felt, but no words would come out.

“Daniel….” I just can’t get it out.

“Yes,” he said trying to make me finish.

“Nothing, I’m just thinking I might want to go travel for a year. But I don’t know if I want to leave Washington.”

He looked a bit sad when he said, “Well, what’s keeping you here?”

“I don’t know, my aunt, and my friends here I guess, “ You

“Then you should go, if that’s what you really want to do.”

“But there is one more thing keeping me here. It’s actually the main reason I don’t want to go.” I said, looking down.

“What’s that?” he asked.

“You,” I said quietly, still looking at the ground. I was looking at the box patter on the cement.

Daniel tilted my chin up with his fingers. He leaned down and I stoop on my tippy toes in my brown flats to kiss him. His lips were sweet and soft. I could hear my heart beating out of my chest. The kiss was short and wonderful and just like that it was over. He still kept his hand on my cheek.

“Ever since the first day in the rain, I’ve wanted to do that. You are my best friend and I love you.”

“I love you more.” I said.

“I love you most.”

“I love you times infinity.”

“Ditto,” he said and we both started laughing. He reached down and grabbed something out of the picnic basket. It was an ipad. He opened something on it and showed me. It was open to a world map.

“Where do you want to go? Where ever you go, I’m coming with you, anywhere.” He said looking at me with his big light blue eyes.

I looked up at him and smiled.
