As Shallow As The Sea

Summary

A poem about fishing that isn't really about fishing.

I was inspired by a comment by Jack Diamond saying 'Maybe when you go down to the sea, you will find their are plenty of fish in it' and also the idea of using your heart as bait.

Hope you like it.

As Shallow As The Sea

I travelled out to sea to see
if a fish out there might be.
I look but it's just not that easy
when you're as shallow as the sea.

I watch the many fishes swim,
I watch them swimming by,
I sigh 'I need the perfect catch'
as one catches my eye.

A shining, golden, slender fish,
with perfect little fins,
and big green eyes that scrutinize,
and make me forget my sins.

Perfect on the outer layer,
she could be black on the inside,
but my heart is set on this one fish,
at mercy to the tide.

Foolishly I grab my bait,
still beating, round and red,
not thinking with my fishing rod,
but rather with my head.

I put the bait out on the line
and cast out for my 'prey,'
it didn't work, it never does,
somehow she got away.

For a moment though, I think I had
her biting on the line,
'cause now it seems I have no bait,
I couldn’t make her mine.

So I watch the many fishes swim,
swimming idly by,
without the bait it seems as though
not one can catch my eye.

I've heard that if you just stop looking,
you'll find what you're looking for,
another fish will come on by,
it'll feel just like before.

Still I watch the many fishes swim,
fixed on my loss, I cry,
but I hope that if I just give up,
another might catch my eye.

So I watch the many fishes swim,
swimming idly by,
deep down I know it just takes time,
before one will catch my eye.
