Like Birdsong

Like uncaged birds
we flew the nest,
and wing in wing
we flew out west,

to greener pastures,
bluer skies,
to see which dreams
we'd realize,

we flew up high
above the crowds,
to find our heaven
amongst the clouds,

but through the mist,
our wings entwined,
a paradise
we did not find,

just sunlight glaring,
blinding bright.
We burned our wings.
Day turned to night.
