Summary

I wanted to play with the idea of having both hope and no hope when waking up in the morning.

On one hand the day might be the best of your life. On the other hand it might be your worst. It might just be average, who knows.

I think the last line is the most interesting, playing with the idea of an optimistic pessimist.

Optimistic Pessimist

Backwards blackbirds and screeching songbirds
greet your waking ears.
Accusing sunlight blinds your sight
and inspires your inner fears.

You're all at sea and
your friend ships are sinking,
there are holes in the sails
and your confidence shrinking,

you can't think why you would wake up
without a reason to sing,
but why don't you just wait and see?
Who knows what today might bring?

The best day of your life, perhaps?
I hope it doesn't go too fast.
But if you're really, really lucky,
it might just be your last.
