The sun didn't rise that morning. The thick superstorm clouds that brought on the previous evening had gone by 2am leaving a clear starry sky. By 6:30am, scheduled sunrise, there was no sunrise. Instead rose a green star, far from our solar system, an ugly emerald pearl in the stygian darkness.

The cold night just got colder.

By mid 'day' crowds had gathered in the streets, desperate for human company, companionship in the coldness of this surreal green light. There were mass suicides worldwide, many millions of people unable to cope with the idea of eternal night. Those that didn't commit suicide gathered in unimaginable numbers in parks, stadiums, open countryside, nearly all of the praying, begging, pleading for salvation from that bright yellow god that had abandoned them. Within hours, the predictable murders, rapes, lootings and riots that normally follow such a momentous, disastrous event had ceased, paving the way for an eerie calm that settled over the human race. An acceptance, a dignified resignation to a simple fact.

They were all going to die.

Within hours; barely 10:15pm, the last surviving member of the human race, a young girl, let out her last breath. A single small cloud of carbon dioxide and frozen water particles. She fell to the ground, the last to die of a population numbering near seven billion. The planet continued to turn, one last revolution for a weak but powerful race.

At 6:33am the following morning, dawn broke, pouring over the horizon of a world free of Man. For there were no bodies, no buildings, no paintings and no books. No trace.

A blank canvas.
