Faint Applause

My military mouth marched
Across the expectant cutlery
And kicked away the cruet sets
With leopard trim Jackboots.
Caught up in the swell of the campaign
I failed to notice the pincer movement of disapproval
The polite bayonet-sharpening
After a Lemon Meringue armistice
My troops fortified by best Burgundy
I let fly my poodles of war
My dazzling cannons firing ME
My wonderful essence!

My post-war brain is straining to remember
If I really discussed
Fisting
With Nanny

I shall exile myself to Alba.
