The memoir, ‘Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother’ by Amy Chua is an engaging read because it offers an insight into the essence of strict parenting and culturally influenced discipline through her honest journey as a Tiger Mother. This memoir is definitely a fascinating read because it gives the reader a prelude of Chua’s thought-provoking morals and astounding persona.
In Chua’s memoir, she asserts the importance of different morals. She argues that parents should teach their children the importance of education to better motivate them to strive academically and prepare them for their future. In her book, she gives the readers specific things
that her two daughters, Sophia and Lulu were forced to abide, some of these were as Chua states,“get any grade less than an A, play any instrument other than the piano or violin, not play the piano or violin”(pg. 4-5). These guidelines show that Chua has high standards for her daughters when it comes to academics and already knows what’s best for them when it comes to their interest. From this quote, it is shown that, With Chua’s high expectations, she is pushing her daughters by giving them specific things that they aren't allowed to do. These morals teach her daughters to strive towards excellence in school and excel at anything they do. Chua made an excellent point as a parent stating, “To get good at anything you have to work, and children on their own never want to work, which is why it is crucial to override their preferences”(pg. 29). Chua emphasizes the necessity of tough parenting when it comes to raising children. She as a mother works hard to raise her daughters in a well-respected manner, teaching them life lessons to aim for their best in anything they do. These quotes portray how Chua’s strict morals on her daughter's, allow them to set higher goals for themselves to not only meet her expectations but carrying these morals with them. Just like any parents, Chua cares for her children’s success and wants to ensure her daughter's bright future. She expects her daughters to aim their hardest at anything they do, and self-confidence will follow.
Prepare yourself for Battle of the Hymn of the Tiger Mother! With Chua’s impressive persona, which had influenced her ways of teaching her successful daughters through a Chinese parenting theory. Can’t debate with Chua as she states, “At home, the girls never missed a single day at the piano and violin, not even on their birthdays or on days when they were sick (Advil) or had just had dental surgery (Tylenol-3, with codeine). I didn’t see why we should miss a day when we were traveling.” (pg. 14). This quote shows that Chua means serious business when it comes to practicing an instrument. The overall effect for Chua to do this is to show her daughters that to be great at something, they have to get the hang of practicing. Chua’s method is based on culturally influenced discipline that motivates and encourages children to aim for the skies. Her persona indicates and emphasizes Chua’s dedication to her method of parenting which includes meeting her expectations to encourage her daughters to strive for excellence. Chua will put into any effort to make her daughter's successful. In the book, Chua meets her foil with her second daughter, Lulu, unlike her easygoing big sister, Sophia who succeeds at her task, Lulu, on the other hand, was indomitable and was willing to challenge Chua’s method of parenting at any aspects. For Lulu’s achievements come at the cost of tears and fierce arguments, and due to her strong persona, Chua was able to challenge Lulu to the best of her ability to succeed and hope for self-confidence to follow. According to Chua she is still dedicated, as she states, “ I didn’t really give up. I’m still in the fight. Albeit with some significant modifications to my strategy.” This quote emphasizes that she is determined to face any challenge she approaches to when it comes to wanting the best for her daughters. With her real persona, it indicates that she is capable of doing anything for her children to meet her expectations. These reasons explain why she earned her title as “Tiger Mother.” Based on these quotes it gives us a reader of how Chua’s persona help raise her daughters, especially her second daughter Lulu through cultural influence discipline. This book is an engaging read because it demonstrates Chua fierce persona and what she is willing to take on no matter how indomitable it can be to ensure her daughters a bright future.

Chua gives the audiences her essential morals lifting the readers through her journey as a tough mother with high expectations of her daughter. Her astonishing persona enlightens the readers of a different perspective on raising their children, giving her the name “Tiger Mom.” This book is a highly recommended read!
