Four friends at a New Year's party, all trying to find someone to kiss at the end of 2010 and at the beginning of 2011. I'm not sure what this is, I just wrote it using characters from a novel I'm currently writing.

When Leigh walked in the door, she was faced with a scene that she thought she would never fit into, a scene that she had pictured in a mind a thousand times, thinking ‘yeah, right. Who would invite me to a New Year’s party?’ But there she was. Frankie Freyer had invited her, Chloe, Adèle and Jayne to his much talked about yearly party. She wasn’t even sure why she had been invited. Chloe, yes. Adèle, yes. But her and Jayne? It seemed a bit out of character for the cool kids to invite the socially challenged. She thought about the possibility of Julian slipping a word to Frankie to invite them. She quickly scanned the crowd for the black hair she knew so well, and found a pair of blue eyes looking at her. Julian winked, and slowly began to make his way over, chatting to a few people on his way.
Leigh self consciously looked down at what she was wearing. Chloe had insisted that she dress her, seeing as this was the first ‘proper’ party she had been to. Leigh had groaned, when she saw that Chloe had picked out the short dress (it was almost a clubbing dress) she had worn to the school ball last year, and some of her own killer heels. But she trusted her judgment, and the dress seemed to be attracting a lot of attention from male eyes. Forgetting that Julian was coming over, she quickly grabbed a coke, and made her way to the corner of the room, where she wouldn’t be seen. She sighed. It was going to be a long night.
“Leigh!” She turned to the direction where the voice was coming from.
“Oh! Julian!” she said. “Hi”.
“Hey. What are you doing standing in the corner? I’ve seen a lot of guys looking at you tonight, and I can understand why.” He slowly looked up and down her figure, his eyes resting on hers.
Leigh blushed. “Chloe got to me”, she waved her hand in the air and smiled. “She pretty much forced me to come. I don’t really do the whole party thing”
“So then why did you come? Peer pressure?” he said.
“Uh yeah that’s exactly it”, she replied. She was lying. She wanted to tell him that she had come just to see him and that she would do anything for him. She honestly wouldn’t be surprised if her nose started to grow.
“To be honest, I don’t like parties either. Or alcohol” He held up a coke, identical to her own, and smiled.
“Good to know that I’m not the only weirdo on the planet, then”
Julian looked into her eyes, like he was searching the depths of her soul. He moved close to her and touched her palm to her cheek. “You’re not a weirdo, Leigh. To me, you are the complete opposite”, he said softly. She held his palm to her cheek, and leaned in to breathe his natural scent. She was sure he was about to kiss her when he stood back and took his palm out from under her hand. He looked into her eyes one more time before he said “I’ll see you later” and melted back into the crowd.

Leigh just stood there for a few minutes, stunned. This has to mean something, she thought. She found a chair and sat down. She had only been alone with her thoughts for a minute or two when she heard a “Leigh!”
She half expected it to be Julian again, but it was Adèle.
“Oh, hey, Adèle”, she said. “Julian just came over to see me…” She trailed off, touching her hand to her cheek.
“Oh, my God”, she said. “What happened?”, she said excitedly
“Well, we were just talking about the party and stuff, and then I said something about me being a weirdo, where he touched his palm to my cheek and said I was the complete opposite of a weirdo to him. And I thought he was about to kiss me but all he said was “I’ll see you later” and walked away.”
Adèle looked incredibly happy. “Wow that’s so awesome, Leigh! But you don’t look very happy” She frowned.
“I am, it’s just…I don’t know, I’m being silly.”
“Tell me Leigh!! We’re best friends; you know you can tell me anything.”
“I know it’s just…I’ve got a strange feeling about it that’s all” Leigh suddenly brightened up. “Anyway enough about me, did you manage to ask Frankie if he would like to share a New Year’s kiss with you?”
Adèle blushed bright red.
“Tell me!” said Leigh
“Actually, he asked me! I was dancing with Jayne when I heard his voice in my ear saying “Adèle Farrell, will you share a New Year’s kiss with me, from 11:59 to 12:01?”
And I whispered back - “Yes, I will Frank Freyer.” I could almost hear him smiling. The he said “Great. Meet me in the middle of the dance floor” I nodded and kept dancing without turning around” “It was rather romantic” she added.
Leigh laughed. “That’s awesome, Adèle! Do you think it’ll lead on to anything?” she asked.
Adèle shrugged. “I’m not fussed. Sure, it’ll be awesome if it does, but as long as I get my kiss, I’ll be happy.” She suddenly stood up, pulling Leigh with her. “C’mon Leigh, that’s enough boy talk, let’s go find Chloe and Jayne and have a dance!”
“Wait!” Leigh said. “Let me take off these shoes. I’d rather not have a broken ankle.” She pulled them off, put her drink on a table and let Adèle drag her off to find Chloe and Jayne.
Jayne and Chloe were both talking to Jace Lewis, Julian’s best friend. Well, more Jayne than Chloe. Chloe was sitting down drinking a ginger beer, while Jayne talked to Jace about her starting piano, and the possibility of Jace giving her lessons. “Chloe! Jayne! We are going to dance!” Leigh said. Chloe leapt up. “Sure! More interesting than what I’m doing now” She was just putting her drink down when she dropped it, staring at Leigh’s bare feet with her mouth open. “LEIGH RHINEHART, WHAT DID YOU DO WITH MY SHOES?!”, she growled. Leigh was scared of Chloe then, and hoped her reason was good enough. “Well, I didn’t want to break my ankles dancing, so I thought I’d better take them off…” She stopped speaking when she saw Chloe’s murderous glare. She looked away to see Jace whispering into Jayne’s ear. She nodded and smiled. “Bye ‘til later, then”, he said, and walked over to where Julian was standing. Leigh avoided looking at him.

“So what was that all about, Jayne?” Adèle asked, as the moved their bodies to the pounding beat.
“I’m kissing Jace at midnight!”, she said.
“So now two of us have kisses at midnight” Adèle said. “I’m kissing Frankie!”
Chloe and Leigh looked at each other.
“Hey, Chloe”, a voice purred from behind her.
Chloe turned around and was surprised to see who it was. “Will Accardo” she breathed. Will was half Italian, born in New Zealand with olive toned skin, and a voice like velvet. Girls wanted him, and boys wanted to be him. “What can I do for you, on this fine evening?”
Will trailed a finger down the curves of her torso. “Well, you can kiss me at midnight…” he whispered.
“I’m sure that is quite within my capabilities, Mr. Accardo.”, she said, smirking a little.
“Excellent”, he said. “Ciao, ladies” He walked away, and all the girls in the room either turned to watch him walk away, or shot evil looks at Chloe.
“Ciao…” Chloe, Adèle, Leigh and Jayne all sighed.
Chloe, Adèle and Jayne looked at Leigh expectantly.
“I think it’s about time you sought out Julian, Leigh”, Jayne said. “It’s 11:45.”
“I don’t know, I think I should wait for him”, she said sadly.
“Well you won’t be waiting long, ‘cause he’s coming here right now”, Adèle said, nodding in Leigh’s direction.
Leigh stopped dancing and turned around. “Hi again” she said to Julian.
“Hey you”, he said. “Leigh, do you want to go for a walk with me? I need a bit of fresh air. And so do you, by the looks of your cheeks”. He lightly touched the cheek he had placed his palm on earlier, and a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. Leigh could feel her friends’ stares boring into her back.
“Sure, let’s go”, she said. He finally smiled, and took her hand and led her swiftly towards the door. Leigh turned around and waved quickly at her friends with her free hand. They all made kissy faces at her.

The blast of cool night air was incredibly refreshing. Leigh and Julian walked down a path, that Leigh saw, would evidently lead to Pohutukawa Bay. Already she could hear the waves lapping at the shore. She didn’t say any thing; she just listened to Julian’s steady breathing and the orchestra of crickets that played in the long grass. It was the perfect night.
As he led her to the sandy path he said “This is my favourite place to come and think about things. You know, just think.” He looked at her. “And I want to share it with you tonight.”, he said.
Leigh was so deeply touched, that all she could whisper was “Thank you.” Then she gasped as he led her around to a pohutukawa that she had never seen before. Its roots twisted through the sandy banks, and branches dropped low towards the powdered sand, perfect for sitting on. The moonlight made even the red flowers become clearly visible.
“A thing of beauty is a joy for ever”, she whispered, not even sure if Julian had heard her.
“Come sit up here, Leigh”, he said, and kicking his shoes and socks off, he pulled himself up onto one of the low branches, sitting on it with both legs facing the sea. He bent to pull her up, but she did it herself, with surprising flexibility and strength. They sat close, with their middle ankles crossing and thighs touching. Julian turned toward Leigh and cupped her face gently. “Leigh…you are the most beautiful, most caring, most wonderful girl I’ve ever met. And…and I’m falling in love with you. I know there’s not much chance of you feeling the same way, but I just had to tell you.” Leigh looked back at him with solemn eyes.
“Julian” she said. “Oh Julian, I’ve never met anyone else like you. You stir up everything inside of me and change the way I think about everything. I started falling in love with you the day I met you…”
He smiled. “Well, now that’s out of the way, I can finally kiss you”
And as his lips touched hers, fireworks exploded over the city.
