"count the stars," she whispers, her eyes shining as moonlight seeps in through the window. her caramel hair falls across her shoulders, and i lift a strand to twirl it around my finger. "because the stars are a lullaby in 'emselves. let the constellations sing you to sleep."

our legs are tangled in the sheets and she's snoring softly at my side. goosebumps rise on my skin at the chilly breeze slithering in through the window, opened just a crack. her arms are wrapped tightly around my body, like she's afraid of losing me to the darkness inhabiting the night. i smile softly, relishing the feeling of her hot breath on the back of my neck. another icy breeze curls around my body, as though the cold night is trying to pull me from her arms. i stiffen, and this is what wakes her. her light snores cut off and her breaths lose their steady rhythm.

"you're awake." she murmurs tiredly, unwrapping her arms from around my body. she lifts her left hand to trace circles on my arm, and i sigh softly.

"i can't sleep," i begin with a quiet huff of breath, "the cold is keeping me up." i turn my body to face her, and i immediately feel lost in those soft hazel eyes. her lips are slightly parted, and she gazes at me with the same affection as i do her.

"count the stars." she whispers, her eyes shining as the moonlight seeps in through the window. her caramel hair falls across her shoulders, and i lift a strand to twirl it around my finger. "because the stars are a lullaby in 'emselves. let the constellations sing you to sleep." she mimics my movement, taking a strand of my dark hair with a gentle smile. i gaze into her eyes, and she is so beautiful that i forget how to look away.

"oh, love." i murmur, lifting a hand to stroke her cheek. "you are my stars, my constellations, my twinkling night sky. it's your eyes that sing me to sleep."

a/n: i did put this one under 'short story' but it may be made into a series of poetic short stories. is there even an official name for things like this? whatever. another thing i feel i need to bring up is 'to the sky'. i'm having a bit of writer's block every time i try to come up with a new chapter, so it may be put on hold soon. please comment if you'd like 'count the stars' to become a novel, and i'd also really love to see your feedback. x
