A box full of letters
is a curious thing.
The box can be opened
and people can see in.
Letters will be read,
a story will be told
and secrets, long-lost,
will be revealed and known.
The first letter was dated ‘March 5th, 1923’. It was the bottom of the box, and we all wanted to start at the beginning. My daughter sat on the old oak floorboards, looking at me with a
smile of interest on her face as I opened the envelope and began reading.
My dearest Evelyn,
Please forgive me if my letter arrives late. I have not had time to get to the post office recently and my mother is working me hard. I am just hoping this arrives in time for your birthday, because I am sad to inform you that I won’t be able to make it. Things have come up... things which I must not ignore.
Please don’t hate me for this,
