The Caregiver

As she picks up the broken pieces of the cup, she cuts her finger

it slowly bleeds,

She does not notice going through the motions of her very

long day

Across the table he sits, staring at the cup with intense scrutiny,

he pushes it away

Her arms are weakening, his spirit fading, she pulls him up

and moves him to his chair

He smiles and closes his eyes, he sleeps for now.

She sits, she breathes in, she breathes out, a few moments to rest

He does not know who she is anymore, but she remembers

Somewhere within the tangles of his mind he understands

that she is the one, the one who never leaves
