I nearly jumped out of my sweats when the microwave went off, telling me that my cookies were heated up. Christmas is always so depressing and lonely, for me anyways. My sister and parents are both in southern California, and my Aunt Charlotte is in Alabama, when I’m stuck here in butt-ass freezing Montana. I honestly don’t know why I still live here anymore…
I got up and walked over to the microwave, almost tripping over my slumbering English bulldog, Lucy, named after Lucy Ricardo from the television show I Love Lucy. “Luuucy, you big lump of a dog.” I said as I grabbed the cookies and my hot chocolate. She slowly got up and walked to the couch, jumped up onto it, and settled down in her corner before falling asleep again. I sat down, started my favorite movie Love actually, and quietly enjoyed myself.
While watching the movie, many things were running through my mind. Most importantly, Brittany was on my mind. Brittany is a coworker of mine, who started working the same shift as me about three months ago. Before that, I was the only one who bartended at the local bar. At first, she was shy and quiet, which I expected, but within the first two weeks, she really started to open up to me. We’ve been out a couple times together, getting coffee or shopping for new snow boots. I never really started to think about the feelings that I have for Brittany until about a week ago. Recently, we’ve been getting really close, like having sleepovers at each others’ houses, like little girl best friends. I feel so comfortable with her, no matter what we do. We sometimes even save each other from the disgusting men that live in town. To be completely honest, I’ve never confronted myself about my sexuality until Brittany came along. I just hope she feels the same towards me… I doubt it. Her curly, blonde hair and gorgeous ice blue eyes have for surely attracted many men, and one of those guys is really lucky…
I started to drift off to sleep, when the there was a faint knocking at the door. I quickly got up and answered it. To my surprise, and delight, Brittany was on my doorstep, in her warm and fuzzy red winter coat with her hair braided to the side. “Hey!” She said with a smile. I said hey back, and stepped aside to let her in. I caught a swift smell of her peppermint perfume, and smiled to myself in excitement.
“What are you doing here?” I asked as I sat on the couch next to my lazy Lucy.
“Well, I was sitting at home alone, watching some random movie on TV, and I started to think about you… I was hoping you didn’t have very many people over,” she looked over at Lucy and giggled, “I need to tell you something Dianne.”
“Alright, shoot.” I stared into her eyes and intently listened to ever word she said.
“Well, we met three months and some odd number of days ago, and our friendship has really flourished in such a short amount of time. I seriously start to feel more and more closer to you every day I’m with you. I look forward to work every day because you’re there. Do you know what I want for Christmas?”
“You.” She looked straight at me then. I couldn’t say anything because I was in shock…
“What… do you mean?” I finally asked after a minute.
“Dianne, I love you. And I understand if you think it’s wrong for two girls to be in love, but frankly, I don’t care. I love you, and I want to be with you.” ‘Holy shit’ was all I could think at that moment. She actually loved me. Finally, for once, things were going to work out for me.
“I love you too, Brittany.” I smiled and took her hands. She beamed with excitement and joy, and kissed me. Her lips were soft and fruity, and perfectly fit to mine. I knew it. We were meant to be together.
We held each other and watched movies the rest of the night, before falling sleep in each others’ arms. It was the best night of my life. Now, I know that I’m never going to spend another holiday alone, all because of one perfect girl, Brittany.
