This is a snippet of a short story I have written. If the reviews are good I'll post the rest! Maybe even make it a full on book.
This is about a young girl, Maggie, with an obviously troubled past. She moves to a new town with her parents. She discovers something terribly terribly wrong with their new home. But will anybody listen?

 From Beneath the Ice:

A Horror Story by Othella Calhoun

Maggie exhaled a cloud of smoke into the freezing cold air. They’ve only been here 15 minutes and she already hated it. Her father had the choice of being transferred here, the quietest most boring town in Colorado, or Hawaii. Of course he chose here. He said it was a better opportunity for “all of us”. Maggie knew he meant somewhere she couldn’t make trouble. She was twenty years old, far too old to be told what to do, or be living with her parents. But if she wanted to go to college, this was the deal. Her mother and father would provide for her so long as she lived under their watchful eye. The sooner she got her education the sooner she could leave home and start her own life, far far away from her parents.

She heard footsteps crunching in the snow and quickly flicked her cigarette down, and sank further into the thick bushes that surrounded the old Victorian style house. “Thought I’d find you hiding around here.” Her father mumbled roughly. Rough. That was the only word that Maggie could ever come up with to describe her father. He sniffed the air. “Dammit Mag, I keep telling you those things will kill you, if you’re mom ever finds out...

She won’t.” Maggie interrupted him. He just sighed, shaking his head. They stood there silently looking over their new backyard which was a steep hill was leading down to a rather large pond. There was a small dock, and Maggie saw that as an opportunity. “I’m gonna go check out the pond.

Alright, but come up soon. I’ll unload your stuff but I’m not going to unpack it.” He turned and walked away, stopping once to look at her over his broad shoulder before disappearing around the house.

Maggie trudged her way down to the pond and sat down on the edge of the dock, dangling her feet. The water was frozen solid. She sighed, lighting up another cigarette after checking behind her to find her mother nowhere in sight.

Then she heard it.

There was a slight tapping sound. Maggie looked around and saw nothing. “Dad?” Nothing.

Then she heard a scratching sound. Still, she saw nothing. “Hmph.” She mumbled to herself.

Suddenly, she felt something beneath her feet. A hard thump. “Shit!” She pulled back dropping her cigarette.

The tapping and scratching continued. Maggie peered over the dock slowly. She reached a single foot to the ice, scraping off the snow cover..and screamed.

Someone..something..was beneath the ice, staring at her. Its teeth impossibly sharp. Maggie couldn’t move, it was if she was frozen. The creature smiled at her, then with a long lizard like tongue, licked the surface of the ice, and mouthed...

Maggie.
