I breathed in today
And you weren’t there
Like the inhalation was knowledge
And I’d forgotten how to exhale
I breathed in today
And it was different to yesterday
Like the breathing and the living
Were somehow disconnected
And their twin purposes turned on each other
I breathed in today
And you weren’t there
You haven’t been for awhile
But today when I breathed
I knew you were not,
Breathing with me
And that breathing without you
Was different
Like freedom, and independence
But sudden and frightening
I breathed in today
And for a second, perhaps longer
I held it
Wanting to feel only superficially
What you felt
The final breath…
But then I breathe out
You are not here
