Footsteps
She hears the steady footsteps
And her heart sinks
As she begins to prepare
For the angry fight that’s to come
She hears the steady footsteps
And hides the razor
Covering the still-bleeding cut
Before the door can be opened
She hears the steady footsteps
And scrambles to put away the needle
And stash the drugs
Before prying eyes can see
She hears the steady footsteps
Then lowers the loaded gun
But as they recede
She pulls the trigger
She hears the pounding footsteps
And then she hears no more
