Price of War

A man was killed tonight. Killed for honor, respect, and the chance to say he died fighting for his country. He left a wife, children, family and friend behind on a chance that he could survive the bombs of war and come home to tell the tale. A country that seems so elegantly to be falling apart, crumpling away at the core and a country that took his life. Today he could be watching his sons soccer game, his daughters ballet recital, or his wife’s kind and understanding face. Instead he lies in a mess of other bodies just as robbed and unmoving as he. “He’s got guts” they would say to him, the people he loved, “nerve and a heart of gold”. What does he have now? No more beating heart, working nerves, and his guts are almost surely a few yards away. I begin to wonder, hope even, that the god he put so much faith in hasn’t let him down. I hope all the time he spent on his knees praying has been worth something in the end. The end … a simple finish to a fairy tale and yet his life was everything but. He got no fairy god mother, but a drill sergeant. Glass slippers became combat boots, and pumpkin carriages were replaced by Humvees. His family suffers in silence for their loss because it is too painful to produce tears. His fellow companions in the war hoist him up from the dirt and rubble to carry him away from the spot he met his demise. Arms that used to embrace now hang limp. A mouth that used to smile is now glued with blood into a permanent frown. Legs that once raced alongside friends are now missing somewhere in the chaos. This is what can happen in the war. This is what happens defending a country, standing up for your rights, and clearing a path for a better future. This is the price or war.
