Summary

One day it'll hit us. One day we'll know. One day the world stops moving and everything is clear.

Today,
I am free
like a long-imprisoned prisoner
exiting the cell that's kept him away
from the world outside,
only to take a step into the air
for the first time in a long time,
to see with his own eyes real grass,
a sky not barred in from all fronts,
an ice-cream truck lollying along
playing its silly, catch tune
that brings back so many memories
of the innocent child
who came before the experienced man
of today.
Today,
I am free,
no more the frightened little kid
afraid of monsters hiding under my bed,
or hiding in the closet,
ready to jump out and eat me
at any one moment
or steal from me my favorite little doll.
I'm no longer afraid of the unknown,
of why my nails are pink at the bottoms
and white at the top,
not afraid of where I'm going -
if I miss my bus,
I'll just catch the next one,
or the one that leaves tomorrow,
or that one that goes to a place
far, far away from here.
I'm not afraid to turn the lights down low
or think of a future that isn't yet planned
because today, I am free.
Yes, freer than the birds in the sky,
the fish in the sea,
the little bugs excavating through the ground.
I'm free,
and I know I'll always be
nothing other that who I am.
Today, I've become me.
