Day Hike

Water rushes down

A narrow creek bend.

Spills into a lake

Damned at the other end.

“I haven’t seen the sunrise since I don’t know when.”

Birch and Oak trees stunted.

Hemlocks halfway down.

I stand among the fallen chestnuts.

“I haven’t seen the sunrise since I don’t know when.”

Trees surrounded by the

Whispers — my own; the winds.

“I haven’t seen the sunrise since I don’t know when.”

My feet begin to patter

The leaves — they crunch.

My banks; won’t hold any longer.

“I haven’t seen the sunrise since I don’t know when.”
