I can't put a summary here because the poem should be read on its own without being set up in any way. That was how it was written, intentionally. To stand alone.

I loved the way he used to smile,

It began in his mouth, then spread to his eyes.

It lingered there a moment after

His mouth had lost all trace of laughter.

I loved the way that he would care

So much for trifling things,

A menu choice was life and death,

And children, to him, kings.

I loved all of his quirks and flaws,

The details others could not see

I loved all aspects of who he was,

I loved him perfectly.

Now that he has left my life,

I finally can see:

My problem was not loving him,

But him not loving me.
