Everything is tiny in China. It is so far away it is tiny, and the burned roads burn up to the top of the hill like black snakes, curling black ribbons. I walk in the field, afraid to drop my bowl of rice, afraid there would be no more food. And the bowl I am carrying in my child’s hands is valuable. I bury it under a fence because I am without a home and family.
