Short story by: TheTruth

Isn’t it funny, one year you move, and you tell yourself, I will never smile again, but the truth was I never really smiled before I moved anyways, so what would change? First few months pass by, I don’t smile, I don’t make friends, and I just slide by and try to blend in with the walls. As my junior year was nearing the end I thought I was going to be different. Maye just... MAYBE I could make some friends, smile for once, change who I really am. This could be like my fresh start many people want, but don’t get.

Throughout my entire summer I worked, read, wrote, and listened to music. Nothing changed I didn’t talk to anyone, stayed in my room just tried to make the best of it. Then summer ended, I began to go back to school every day, senior year I thought, boy isn’t the senior year supposed to be the best year of high school? Then why didn’t it feel like it? Half of my day passed by, I still didn’t see the point of why I wasn’t skipping class yet. Then a period before I was allowed to leave, I went into a study period you could call it. There I was going to get it switched out so I could leave earlier, but then she walked in.

At first I just glanced over and didn’t really acknowledge her, and went back to talking to my teacher. As the class began, I realized she was sitting across from me, I figured cool, another girl, and she must be like the rest, snobby, stuck up, and didn’t care for anyone probably just something else. Those were just the first simple thoughts before I got to know her, then we met, some thoughts changed I realized she isn’t stuck up, or snobby.

A few weeks passed, I decided to do my usual smile, and pretend everything is peachy. One day I decided to bug her on Facebook, because she got recommended to me as a friend. So I took the recommendation and sent her a message. We began talking, and the more we talked, the more I realized how wrong I was. She wasn’t snobby, she wasn’t stuck up. But she was something else. She actually knew what it meant to be the few that understand how really hard it can be for some of us. She cared for others, she wasn’t some girly girl who did her nails everyday but instead she volunteered her time at the fire department!

The more I kept talking to her, the more I realized she is perfect. Wow not going to lie, finding perfect girls in this world in this generation is hard. Most people just want to care what others think about them, but not her, she was confident, smart, and beautiful. So even if someone did try and put her down, she could look into the mirror and see how wrong they really are.

Is it possible for one person to be able to change how you act, how you see the world, how you think of others? I do know she made me realize what amazing friends I really have, but most of all she made me realize that even though I didn’t want to believe it, she knows exactly what I go through.

This is the fourth week into the school year, maybe I can survive this year. If I keep her as my friend this year will fly by, maybe it will be better than before the move. Sometimes change is for the better, other times its not, I need to make it the best and so far, she is helping me! She might not know I like her because I won’t admit it, but sometimes you need to help them, not yourself. Sometimes you need to friend zone someone not because you don’t like them, but because they like someone else. Paul Tillich once said, “The first duty of love is to listen.” Sometimes you need to listen to what they want, not what you want. Remember always their happiness is more important than yours.
