I MET HER TODAY – THE WOMAN WHO HAS NEVER LAUGHED
?
Many many years ago when I was young and carefree, my best friend made a comment that always stuck with me throughout my life. After one of our many
good laughs about something, probably stupid, she said "Mustn’t it be awful to be a person who never laughs". I assured her that there couldn’t be a single person living on the planet that didn’t laugh sometimes and she said I was probably right and the subject closed.
Today, I met her – that woman, the one  who has never laughed. In fact, I think she must think it is against the law to laugh, smile even!!  I have seen this person before – the first time she looked at me daggers, but I just put it down to her having a bad day. I have seen her several times since and her expression has never changed. At first my instinct was to glare back, but then I decided to do the complete opposite and I smiled and said "hello". Needless to say she didn't return the smile and I received no response to my salutation. Suddenly my feelings of annoyance changed to pity - this lady must be very sad, I thought,  her life must have had many trials and tribulations, or at least she would have mumbled a hasty" hello" back.  Instead she remained in her own unhappy world oblivious to me or anything good around her.  The sun was shining, the birds were singing but she was unaware.
Each time I see her, I will smile and say "hello" and , perhaps, one day she will respond amicably. If she does that day will be very special because I will know that just a simple smile and a courteous gesture, will have shown her that someone cares and, hopefully, changed, for just a little while, the way she feels about her life.
