Scratching

I scratch for tiny hidden spaces;
To bring to life this child of mine.
Stretch thinly through the small dark places;
Forcing a dim, damaged light to shine.

I know that birth should be a hard thing;
But why compressed in space and time.
An explosion of being, alive and unrelenting;
Captured and confined by a missing rhyme.

Where are the wide open plains;
Where is the room to range free;
Why must every word be harried and pursued;
Cornered and caged in rhyme and in meaning;
In a wild raging race against the dim dying light;
And the cloying sleep which is outpacing me.
