Summary

As those of you reading my novels with any regularity will know, I often include poems. Here is one I have written for my third novel, Stone Sorcerers, due to be posted on here in summer, but I cannot make the poem fit, so here it is in a stand alone form.

Shadows shifted within darker shadows,

Far across the sea, the horizon paled to

The rhythmic beat of animal-skin drums.

Lashed between rough-hewn stakes, our

Offering shivered, her bare skin puckered,

Chilled, and I yearned to touch: to touch.

A congregation of distant cloud blossomed

With colour, ever-changing, lit from within

As a sliver of gold emerged from the sea.

She stirred, our virtuous offering, flexing her

Slender limbs, straining against the binding

Leather thongs that marked her pale flesh.

The rhythmic drumbeat increased in tempo,

The night racing away, hotly pursued by dawn’s

Breaking light that eagerly, transformed the sky.

The unparalleled skill of nature’s tireless brush

Painted up our world, dancing in our offering’s

Golden hair, caught in a gentle, flirtatious breeze.

How she glowed, the sun’s radiance animating her

Naked form, tone of the sea coolly reflected in

Her deep blue eyes: and I; I raised the blade.

Light illuminated ivory skin, glinted from sharpened

Metal, beauty of the sun caressing the beauty of

Life.  Striking down, I knew I loved her: loved her.

My flaxen haired maiden secured a new day, with

The leather thongs severed, I cloaked her with my

Warmth, and she: she warmed me, with her smile.
