Have you ever given a hard look to yourself? Probe deeper, you'll be able to see a stranger lurking within you. I met the other me in me. Read on you will discover yours as well.

The Stranger in My Mirror

Today morning whenI looked into my bed room mirror
I saw someone I've never seen before.
she looks like me, but she is not the girl standing in front.
I'm amazed to see her scheming eyes,
The intensely attractive lips are no doubt, desirable,
But they are not mine.
Her eyes spoke of plans to capture attention, to meet headlines and,
Put up a stiff defence in the face of verbal attacks.
I was scared to see the aggressive and exhausted expression on her face.
'No, this is not me!' I gave out an ecstactic scream.

Just then the girl in the mirror put forward her hand towards me
And touched my cheeks,
I was surprised to see that my petal like cheeks have transformed
Into stiff and scorched skin,
My eyes have lost their soft innocence and become like hers,
I was about to give an ecstatic scream, when she said,
'Grow up girl. you have another self to live.'
I discovered that I've lost my childish innocence forever and have become
A mechanized work force with a certain production capacity and a success quotient.
I was about to break into tears, when
I realized my tears have dried up as well('cause they are unproductive parts of me)
!

I look in the mirror and say where is the black hair now grey. So life plods onward

Yes. Very true. But there's more to it than apparent changes. The changed look also reflects the change in personality and mindset.

How true.. How true..
There were times I look in the mirror myself and don't recognize the person I see..

Yes. there are indeed times when you are in a dilemma and do not know which 'you' to listen. It is only self introspection that reveals the 'other' in you.

I think we don't like what we see at times because we don't like what we are doing and how we have been behaving. seems like we get caught up in what everyone thinks we SHOULD be and also we act accordingly to each person we meet, feeling as though we have to put up defenses and personality traits to fit in or out. Stress reaches to us and strangles our reasons to breath in a healthy way you know?

You have written this poem well Pearlinanoyster ^_^

Thanks. Yes, you are right. Stress often strangles us so much that, we start living double lives, and eventaully kills our original self.

I'm glad that you understood that. In fact it speaks of the clash between two contrasting philosopies: the innocent and vulnerable self with the mature and wise self.

this poem is so gripping that i completely forgot that slowly everything is changing....and we r becoming more and more mechanical .....
i wish everyone understands the implications as well and then the world will be full of cheerfulness and innocence.
intense work

Thanks Pratibha, that was really inspiring. Yes, we are all becoming robots, thanks to the rat race and our eternal search for perfection.
