A letter to a loved one missing home.

Arrived okay in Brooklyn.

Have a swell room with a telephone. Landlady seems friendly even though she smells a bit like piss and stewed tomatoes. Caught her bratty kid wiping snot on the wooden banister yesterday. Little prick.

Whole damn house is full of crazies. Mrs. Lombardi threw her husband's clothes out the window last week. Claimed he was nothin but a scumbag. Next thing I know, the daft old broad is holding his shit stained underpants to her face bawling like a newborn babe. Smeared her pancake makeup and Max Factor lipstick all over the crotch. Rosa says there is no way those skiddies will come clean now. Bloody asshole will be walking around with rainbow drawers. Don't worry, she took him back and he took her to Nathan's Famous for a dog.

Fat Tony in 2B may be moving out. The gal he is getting married to doesn't think the place is good enough. Her big painted gob is all you can hear through the walls. Last night they had a scrap that spilled out onto the street. She gave Tone the finger and he spat on the ground real close to her cheap plastic sandals that squeak . She teetered off and nobody has seen her lard butt since.

I am sick of this heat. Everything here is a pallid shade of beige. People walk down the streets like flaccid catatonic ghosts with shopping bags tethering them to the cement sidewalks.Even shadows lag behind their owners, careful not to get too close. I swear the stoops around here are ingrained with gossip and wet marks from the wilted arses of the ladies who sit all afternoon preparing dinner on their lumpy laps.

I miss trees and the colour green. I miss air that doesn't stink of rancid oil and cabbage. I miss the stillness and hum of the house in the middle of a quiet afternoon. I miss you.

I liked your story, I could literally picture the scene in my head because I'm a Native New Yorker. Your story reminds me of those movies where the guys got greasy hairs combed back and the girls wear skinny jeans with overly tight sweaters. I can picture the woman tossing the guys stuffs out the window cause my sister did that once, although it was in Queens and not Brooklyn. Keep up the good work, I no longer live in New York and you just got me reminiscing a bit.

Appreciate your kind words. It was an exercise in flash fiction. Glad you could relate. Nice to have feedback. I wish there was more on this site.

Hahaha, sorry. It's just I can see everything he's talking about so clearly. This was excellent and so on point. Hahaha, I can see him stopping as he thinks back to the weeks/days events, shaking his head as he tries to write it all down, lol. Truly Fantastic Piece!
