My Dream…Others’ Achievement

by: Elias Matta

Mr. Thomas you’re on in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and the whole crowd goes wild cheering for the young singer and shouting loud his name eager to get up the stage and hold him in their hands. As the music started, a smooth but loud voice jarred on his ears overwhelming all the cheering and voluble music whispering “wake up honey, you’ll be late for school”.

Thomas the 12 years old boy is passionate about becoming a professional singer and a star one day in the future. Despite his young age, he had won several singing competitions at school and even in his state. He had a voice described by many as splendid, exquisite and mature kind of voice. Not until that night that turned his life all around. On the 3rd of December, it was heavily raining when some resistance in an electrical circuit, due to a thunder, produced heat and ultimately resulted in fire inside the house. As firemen reached the place, they were able to save his mom’s life when they entered to Thomas’s room and found his father leaning all over him preventing heat from his son. Few days later, the father died due to severe burn damage saving his son and bringing him back to life.
Nevertheless, this incident had major effect on Thomas in which it eradicated the right half of his face residing splotchy appearance.

As he recuperated from this injury, he started going back to school. However, he rarely hanged out with friends from school or his neighborhood, in fact not all. Hence all his classmates became scared of him and started avoiding any direct contact with this innocent and tender child. Thomas frequently started spending his time alone in his room or walking on the beach and listening to music wherever he was. The reason he became a lonely child is not due to his rude, insolent or unfriendly personality he had. For sure it is because of the burn marks he had after the fire. Despite his physical appearance, Thomas was sure that one day he will make his dream come true and become a professional singer. At least this was what he believed in.

Few years passed and Thomas was still keen about making his dream a reality. His mother always used to support him to achieve a glittering future. But people around them were not supportive at all. They knew that is kid became hopeless.

On his 15th birthday, Thomas’s mom wanted to surprise him on this special day so she registered his name in a singing competition. This competition required contenders to fill a certain application in addition to a song recording of their own. Few days later, as Thomas was at school, his mom received a letter from the contest jury granting him acceptance for an audition in 2 days. The young boy became speechless as he read the letter. He was waiting for this moment years ago. He believed that “it’s time to shine”.

On the audition day, Thomas and all other participants were waiting each one for his turn. As usual, when being in public, he used to receive strange glances from everyone around due to the scar on his face. Fortunately this was not a problem for him. All he was focusing on at that time was making his dream come true. As they called his name out, his heart hasted and started to beat much faster. The moment he entered the audition room and stepped in front of the jury he started to feel thrashing and defeat because of the look on their faces. Without them saying anything, he knew that they don’t want him here and even more, he doesn’t belong to where he is right now. As his audition was over, he came back home and never heard from them.
That wasn’t his last; frankly he gave himself other chances over and over and applied to other singing contests and more doors were shut in his face.

As he became more mature, Thomas realized and believed that he was not born to be a singer. But at the same time he became more adamant with time and wanted to make a change in his life and achieve certain important things.

By the time he turned 21; he graduated from college with musicology degree and started working in a music production company.
3 years later his mother suffered from a lethal heart problem and died 5 months later leaving Thomas all alone facing what life has from obstacles and disclosures.

Later on, Thomas was informed that he inherited a certain amount of money in which his father was saving for him monthly and was maintained by his mother after her husband’s death.

Upon inheritance of the money, Thomas used it as a capital to start his own business in music production with huge emphasis on genuine singers with certain physical disorders.

He wanted others to achieve what was his dream and be judged according to their potentials and skills at the expense of outside appearance.

As his firm grew larger and more successful with time, Thomas was feeling the satisfaction and fairness that he lacked as kid. He lived his dream by paving the way for others to achieve it. Finally he made his dream come true.
