I wasn’t all that penitent
So they put me in a penitentiary
In hopes that I would change my mind
I sat in my cell, so silent
When the Lord visited me
That’s when I saw the bars I was behind.

I fell straight to my knees
Begging for forgiveness
To get me out of this place
He heard each of my pleas
And saw I was in a mess
Then He cried and touched my face

“You went and killed two men
You’d go do it again
If it wasn’t for this pen.
This state’s full right to do
What it feels is best for you
So serve the punishment due.”

“But I promise if you give your heart to Me,
I’ll set you free from the second death
When I come to get My saints
You won’t be with the ones that are left.”

I will be strong for my Lord
I’ll stay here waiting for His day
When He comes back and takes me home
Why shuffle off this cord
Only to eternally burn away
Only to spend forever alone?

I asked my God to give me strength
And wisdom for the long haul coming
Though I knew my soul was settled right
And sitting here for any length
Like a hardened pair of feet from running,
Running right into the light.

When He saw me, I turned well.
Full absolved from time in Hell
I’ll be home in just a spell
“Your wicked ways are through
You’re spared and made like new
I’ve paid the punishment due.”

“But I promise if you give your heart to Me,
I’ll set you free from the second death
When I come to get My saints
You won’t be with the ones that are left.”
