Leadership - Part 11 - FAT, DUMB, AND HAPPY

Peter Hunter

Make a habit of challenging accepted concepts in every field. Years ago as a young systems designer, I often asked why something was done in a particular way, I was frequently met with the answer; "It's the way we've always done it".

Many methods had gone unchallenged for decades and no one could give me a convincing reason for their continuance. More frightening still nobody seemed to care, or to be concerned about changing them…

Fat, dumb and happy…

I made quite a name for myself as someone full of good ideas that saved money and got things moving faster. Although I did nothing to dispel my growing reputation as an original thinker, what I was doing was not so much producing ideas but merely challenging accepted practice and proposing common sense alternatives.

I was not so much being creative as being thorough. Everything can be improved in some way.

Nothing is immune from change…

Nothing is irreplaceable…

If you lead an efficient and talented team then they will have potential abilities and skills so far not explored. Challenge everything.

There are always better ways of doing it…

If you are prepared to put the time and mental energy into continually reviewing all you see around you, and if you have a good grasp of alternative techniques and methods, you will inevitably come up with many good 'ideas' that could benefit your company.

At the same time encourage your team to think the same way. Do not attempt to promote yourself as their monopoly source of ideas. Again you will find yourself having a catalytic effect on others, resulting in the growth of their belief in their own abilities…

End
