“This Land of Death” and “I Am Called Death” were my first 2 haiku, written the same day in May 1973. I believe they both stand up well after nearly 38 years.

ANGRY GOD (II)
Angry God raging
Thinning out the human herd;
Chaos now, not miracles.

ALL HALLOWS EVE (I)
On All Hallows Eve
When goodness goes to sleep,
Great evil surely wakes.

AMBER-TINTED DUSK
Amber-tinted dusk
Foreteller of warmth?  Or cold,
Dank things lurking near?

ANCIENT BEINGS (I)
Ancient beings from
Some twilight world: forgotten
But very far from gone.

THE ANTITHESIS
Daughter of Satan
No Damian here!  Yet she’s
The Antithesis.

BANSHEE WINDS
Mournful banshee winds
Howling with distress for,
Souls lost in a storm.

BANSHEE WINDS SHRIEK
Banshee winds shrieking
Down from the tormenting sky,
The chill of death nears.

THE BEAST CHILD (I)
Beast child born of hate
Raised in a house of terror,
Evil bred within.

A BLACK OBELISK
A black obelisk
Marked with weird hieroglyphs,
A tribute to evil.

CAVALRY OF THE CLOUDS
Phantom horsemen ride
’Cross the sky on snow white steeds,
Warring ’bove the clouds.

CHAMBER OF HORRORS (I)
Eerie creaking chains
Moaning cries are heard within,
A crumbling old house.

THE CHASE IS ON
Angry canine teeth
Chase you through your dreams, then
Catch you when you wake.

CHILDREN OF EVIL
Children of evil
Stalking through dark alleyways,
Hunting human prey.

THE CREDITOR
You sold your soul
For mere fortune and fame,
But now the creditor calls.

CREEPY CRAWLING
Whispery, gabbling voices
Wake you from deep sleep,
Horror creeps round your room.

CRYING TIME
A time of terror
Is drawing ever nearer,
Crying fills the night.

THE CRYPT
A dry crunching of bones
A loud smacking of lips,
Coming from the crypt.

DARK WINGS HOVERING (I)
Dark wings hovering
Blocking out the moon, larger
Than any known bird.

THE DEATHBELL
The deathbell ringing
Calling demons from the sea,
To visit the land.

THE DEATHBELL PEELING
The deathbell ringing
Peeling like the voice of doom,
Terror numbs your mind.

DEATH’S ICY GRIP
The icy grip of death
Grasping a new victim,
Killing him slowly.

EMPTY PROMISES
Empty promises
Used to lull the gullible
Within their deadly reach.

EVIL DOES APPROACH
The unsuspecting
Walk near flickering shadows;
Evil does approach.

FEEL THE LASH
Unsuspecting victims
Are forced to feel the lash,
Of a horrid death.

FLAPPING
Endless black overhead
No moon or stars anywhere;
Flapping slowly nears.

FLESH IN THE FURNACE (I)
Flesh in the furnace
People cooked like animals;
Germany insane.

GARGOYLES
Gargoyles are resting
On the roof top (wings folded);
Waiting just for you.

GARGOYLES HOVER
Gargoyles hovering
Above your bed (wings beating),
Hidden in the dark.

GRINNING, FLESHLESS SKULLS
Grinning, fleshless skulls
On bones picked clean of meat,
By terrors yet unseen.

HELLSCAPES
A sky that rains blood,
Great billowing walls of flesh:
The landscapes of Hell.

THE HUNTER AND THE HUNTED
Sounds of the hunter
And the sounds of the hunted,
But which one are you?

I AM CALLED DEATH
Terror walks by me
Nothing living dares to move,
For I am called death.

ICE-BREATHING DEMONS
Ice-breathing demons
Calling down a frozen Hell;
Freeze you to your soul.

THE LONELY HUNTER (I)
Mournful cry of a
Wolf in the night: Werewolf?
Or just lonely hunter?

THE MESSENGERS OF DEATH
Deep in the shadows
Stand the messengers of hell;
Messengers of death.

RUN!
Evil all about
Warning signs of disaster,
Telling you to run!

SNACK TIME
Unsuspecting prey
Writhing round in agony,
Demons feast on them.

SOULS LOCKED IN TORMENT

Souls locked in torment
Satan has his way with them;
Evil deeds paid for.

SUDDEN DEATH
Dark evil touches
Icy grip of sudden death,
Freezes to your soul.

AN UNSEEN TERROR (I)
An unseen terror
Chews lightly on your shoulder,
Hoping you’ll waken.
