I wake in the night

Shivering cold, alone

And I reach for your hand—

I find a void where your body should lay.

When I cry your name

The wind answers with a whisper

Chilling me to the bone,

Breath catching.

My heart grows wings

And I watch it fly away

Searching for the missing piece

Only you can put back into place.

I lay, bleeding on the bed

Calling your name like a madman

Grasping in the air

Clinging to my thoughts of you.

Too soon my heart returns,

Landing with a thud,

Tired from its journey,

Weeping tears of blood.

And as its beats slow to a stop

I know it could not find you

I know you are gone

And I know that soon I will be gone as well.
