“Pardon” was all you said

Your backpack on the seat next to you

Suitcase on the floor

A shy smile was on your face

I wondered whether you were coming or going

I looked at your bags for some sign of where you where from

But I spied none

Save for a navy pea coat and the word “Pardon”

Paris then or perhaps London I thought

Long hair cascading off your shoulder

The warmth in your eyes

Touched my soul and made me smile inside

For those few short moments, I fell in love with you

I dreamed of all the places we had been

Where we would go, of our children leaving for the university

Of our home in the countryside along the banks of a river as old as time itself

I wanted to speak to you, to hold your hand

To tell you the thoughts that raced through my head

Of all the emotions that coursed through every part of me

But the train too quickly pulled up to Friedrich Strasse

So “Pardon” was all I said as I exited to the platform
