INT. A SWEET SHOP - AFTERNOON

Tall lawyer MR. ROGER GREY is arguing with dainty, petite homemaker MISS SOPHIA HUMBLE. ROGER tries to hug SOPHIA but she shakes him off.

ROGER
Please Sophia, don't leave me.

SOPHIA
I'm sorry Roger, but I'm looking for somebody a bit more brave. Somebody who faces his fears head on, instead of running away.

ROGER
I am such a person!

SOPHIA frowns.

SOPHIA
I'm sorry, Roger. I just don't feel excited by this relationship anymore.

SOPHIA leaves.

ROGER sits down, looking defeated.

Moments later, petite housekeeper DI WARWICK FERGUSON barges in looking flustered.

ROGER
Goodness, Warwick! Is everything okay?

WARWICK
I'm afraid not.

ROGER
What is it? Don't keep me in suspense...

WARWICK
It's ... a fairy ... I saw an evil fairy destroy a bunch of children!

ROGER
Defenseless children?

WARWICK
Yes, defenseless children!

ROGER
Bloomin' heck, Warwick! We've got to do something.

WARWICK
I agree, but I wouldn't know where to start.

ROGER
You can start by telling me where this happened.

WARWICK
I was...

WARWICK fans himself and begins to wheeze.

ROGER
Focus Warwick, focus! Where did it happen?

WARWICK
Mayamayamai! That's right - Mayamayamai!

ROGER springs up and begins to run.

EXT. A ROAD - CONTINUOUS

ROGER rushes along the street, followed by WARWICK. They take a short cut through some back gardens, jumping fences along the way.

EXT. MAYAMAYAMAI - SHORTLY AFTER

CARLA PIGEON an arrogant fairy terrorises two children.

ROGER, closely followed by WARWICK, rushes towards CARLA, but suddenly stops in his tracks.

WARWICK
What is is? What's the matter?

ROGER
That's not just any old fairy, that's Carla Pigeon!

WARWICK
Who's Carla Pigeon?

ROGER
Who's Carla Pigeon? Who's Carla Pigeon? Only the most arrogant fairy in the universe!

WARWICK
Blinkin' knickers, Roger! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most arrogant fairy in the universe!

ROGER
You can say that again.

WARWICK
Blinkin' knickers, Roger! We're going to need some help if we're going to stop the most arrogant fairy in the universe!

ROGER
I'm going to need arrow, lots of arrow.

Carla turns and sees Roger and Warwick. She grins an evil grin.

CARLA
Roger Grey, we meet again.

WARWICK
You've met?

ROGER
Yes. It was a long, long time ago...

EXT. A PARK - BACK IN TIME

A young ROGER is sitting in a park listening to some trance music, when suddenly a dark shadow casts over him.

He looks up and sees CARLA. He takes off his headphones.

CARLA
Would you like some toffees?

ROGER's eyes light up, but then he studies CARLA more closely, and looks uneasy.

ROGER
I don't know, you look kind of arrogant.

CARLA
Me? No. I'm not arrogant. I'm the least arrogant fairy in the world.

ROGER
Wait, you're a fairy?

ROGER runs away, screaming.

EXT. MAYAMAYAMAI - PRESENT DAY

CARLA
You were a coward then, and you are a coward now.

WARWICK
(To ROGER) You ran away?

ROGER
(To WARWICK) I was a young child. What was I supposed to do?

ROGER turns to CARLA.

ROGER
I may have run away from you then, but I won't run away this time!

ROGER runs away.

He turns back and shouts.

ROGER
I mean, I am running away, but I'll be back - with arrow.

CARLA
I'm not scared of you.

ROGER
You should be.

EXT. A LIBRARY - LATER THAT DAY

ROGER and WARWICK walk around searching for something.

ROGER
I feel sure I left my arrow somewhere around here.

WARWICK
Are you sure? It does seem like an odd place to keep deadly arrow.

ROGER
You know nothing Warwick Ferguson.

WARWICK
We've been searching for ages. I really don't think they're here.

Suddenly, CARLA appears, holding a pair of arrow.

CARLA
Looking for something?

WARWICK
Crikey, Roger, she's got your arrow.

ROGER
Tell me something I don't already know!

WARWICK
The earth's circumference at the equator is about 40,075 km.

ROGER
I know that already!

WARWICK
I bite my toenails.

CARLA
(appalled) Dude!

While CARLA is looking at WARWICK with disgust, ROGER lunges forward and grabs his deadly arrow. He wields them, triumphantly.

ROGER
Prepare to die, you arrogant aubergine!

CARLA
No please! All I did was destroy a bunch of children!

SOPHIA enters, unseen by any of the others.

ROGER
I cannot tolerate that kind of behaviour! Those children were defenceless! Well now they have a defender - and that's me! Roger Grey defender of innocent children.

CARLA
Don't hurt me! Please!

ROGER
Give me one good reason why I shouldn't use these arrow on you right away!

CARLA
Because Roger, I am your mother.

ROGER looks stunned for a few moments, but then collects himself.

ROGER
No you're not!

CARLA
Ah well, it had to be worth a try.

CARLA tries to grab the arrow but ROGER dodges out of the way.

ROGER
Who's the mummy now? Huh? Huh?

Unexpectedly, CARLA slumps to the ground.

WARWICK
Did she just faint?

ROGER
I think so. Well that's disappointing. I was rather hoping for a more dramatic conclusion, involving my deadly arrow.

ROGER crouches over CARLA's body.

WARWICK
Be careful, Roger. It could be a trick.

ROGER
No, it's not a trick. It appears that... It would seem... Carla Pigeon is dead!

ROGER
What?

ROGER
Yes, it appears that I scared her to death.

WARWICK claps his hands.

WARWICK
So your arrow did save the day, after all.

SOPHIA steps forward.

SOPHIA
Is it true? Did you kill the arrogant fairy?

ROGER
Sophia how long have you been...?

SOPHIA puts her arm around ROGER.

SOPHIA
Long enough.

ROGER
Then you saw it for yourself. I killed Carla Pigeon.

SOPHIA
Then the children are safe?

ROGER
It does seem that way!

A crowd of vulnerable children enter, looking relived.

SOPHIA
You are their hero.

The children bow to ROGER.

ROGER
There is no need to bow to me. I seek no worship. The knowledge that Carla Pigeon will never destroy children ever again, is enough for me.

SOPHIA
You are humble as well as brave!

One of the children passes ROGER a shiny ring

SOPHIA
I think they want you to have it, as a symbol of their gratitude.

ROGER
I couldn't possibly.

Pause.

ROGER
Well, if you insist.

ROGER takes the ring.

ROGER
Thank you.

The children bow their heads once more, and leave.

ROGER turns to SOPHIA.

ROGER
Does this mean you want me back?

SOPHIA
Oh, Roger, of course I want you back!

ROGER smiles for a few seconds, but then looks defiant.

ROGER
Well you can't have me.

SOPHIA
WHAT?

ROGER
You had no faith in me. You had to see my scare a fairy to death before you would believe in me. I don't want a lover like that.

SOPHIA
But...

ROGER
Please leave. I want to spend time with the one person who stayed with me through thick and thin - my best friend, Warwick.

WARWICK grins.

SOPHIA
But...

WARWICK
You heard the gentleman. Now be off with you. Skidaddle! Shoo!

SOPHIA
Roger?

ROGER
I'm sorry Sophia, but I think you should skidaddle.

SOPHIA leaves.

WARWICK turns to ROGER.

WARWICK
Did you mean that? You know ... that I'm your best friend?

ROGER
Of course you are!

The two walk off arm in arm.

Suddenly WARWICK stops.

WARWICK
When I said I bite my toenails, you know I was just trying to distract the fairy don't you?

THE END
