The Man.
BY: Pop Choyce

They say this man was born on good Friday cause he was a saint, his simple reply was, I was just in the right place at the right time.

At a young age this boy was remarkable. Never failed a class but never really did exceptionally well either, just fine. Good enough that some of his work went on the fridge. Some. This boy, played football, he never was the best, but he was fast, and he could catch. Shame the coach never saw it, cause this boy saw a lot of the bench. When this boy was teenager this teen got his frist kiss from a girl named Kelly. Kelly found him after school one day, she told this teen she liked him, his hair, his eyes, his smile. She told him she liked liked him. Then she kissed him. First kiss at age 13 for this teen. It freaked the teen out, freaked him out so much, that he gathered his things and ran off with his friends to play gi joes in a vacant lot. For two years kelly tried for this teen, tried her might till one day she gave up. This hit the teen pretty hard. From being an idol, a saint, a god, then to nothing, being sold out to damned Bryan Morrison! Bryan Morrison, the teens first fight for love. This first fight was because of Kelly the girl who freaked him out one day after school, this girl that used to follow him and his friends with her friends to the creek where the boys swam, naked, because they just didn’t care. The girl who used to watch him eat his lunch, laughing with his friends, she watched him play G.I. Joes with the other boys, she just watched him. He had his first fight, both boys beat the snot out of eachother and Kelly called them both immature and was completely disgusted by the both of them. The teen made friends with Bryan that same day, and camped out in his back yard that same night, funny how fast these quarrels are over. The teen started highschool, and kelly was still around, and the teen still loved her. Kelly got picked up by the tippy top big dog of the high school. Of course he was a senior. The teen tried his hardest to get her back, and she never noticed. Even when he talked to her flat out about it she just replied with a “you had your chance”. One night, the teen was hanging out by the dug out by the baseball field telling lies of girls they kissed, and slept with, while puffing on cigarettes one of the boys stole from his father. Kelly, in a pretty dress walks past the dug out, in tears. The ball field was in the school yard, and a short walk back to their neighborhood through some trees. The teen sees shes in distress and walks after her, calling her name, he finally grabs her arm and forces her to look him in the eye. She saw he cared. She saw what hes always promised her. The teen asks again what was the matter, and she told. She said her tippy top big dog senior boy friend took her to prom, completely ignored her, and he kissed another girl that just never liked her. The teen, still holding Kellys hand told her that he always liked her, and he would always care for her. Always . He told her that he liked liked her, and that he liked her smile, her hair, her eyes, and how when she gets embarrassed her face turns a soft pink and she puts her head down letting the hair fall into her eyes. He loved everything about her. She looked into his eyes, and knew what he said was true. She knew, and all along she was right, the stupid boy would come to his senses when hes done playing with G.I. Joe’s. And the stupid boy did. She kissed his cheek and said “give me some time”. And thats what the teen did. He waited and waited. She never went out with anyone and neither did he, and they always have been in love but they never showed it. In the halls they smiled, and she would turn pink and put her head down, just how he liked. Senior year came up and the teen asked her to prom, after the dance they went to the ball field where they first talked. She put her hand on his and he looked at her and she said “now”. From that day on they were always together, they called it bliss and their friends called it annoying. Each group hated eachother but they were in love with eachother. The summer came up, and the teen was looking at college. Till the day the letter came. Every teen on his block, his school, his town got a letter. They all showed up, got physicals, nurses told them to take their pants off and with a smart reply “not even dinner first?” got them a nice hard stick with a needle in the ass cheek. They got their papers filled out and arrangements made. They were told they were going to a new world, a new country, a new place, but boot camp comes first. The night before the teen left, the town held a dance for the whole lot. And the teen and kelly found themselves at the same dug out, as they always seemed to find themselves. The teen told kelly he loved her, gave her his cuff links to his suit and said hold them, and she put her face in his chest. She cried and he stayed with her. The teens last question was “will you wait for me?”

The teen got his hair cut, went through boot camp, and the olive green lack of style that they were all given made them all look like the same person from afar. They turned into killing machines, and got killed. His company was sent to some far country, and then was sent even further than that. He watched the scenery change and his brothers die, he watched bombs explode and towns joyous that they were there. They were given flowers, jewlery, and some even surgery to dislodge a bullet from a limb. The teens parents got a letter. The letter told his parents that he was dead, told his family he was dead, told his friends he was dead, told kelly he was dead, shame the poor lads two year service was up.

For four years Kelly mourned over the teens death. Never got over it.She couldn’t believe it. She couldn’t believe him. How could he have died? she spent numerous nights awake crying over him, the boy she loved since elementary school, the stupid boy, had gotten himself killed. She visited the grave site, where they just threw belongings of his into the ground. She threw in his cuff links, his parents threw in some other momentos. And the whole town was in shock, so many of their boys, their teens, their sons died for them.

Kelly went out to get the mail and talk gossip to the other young house owners on the block, the last street light came on and every neighborhood kid sprinted home. The second light came on, and she saw a sillouete of somebody walking down the street, the third one came on, and he was wearing the drab the men wear in service, the fourth one came on and there the teen was. No longer a teen, but a man. The man and kelly looked at eachother for awhile, and he finally mustered a word “babe?” She ran into his arms and he caught her, she cried and he put his face into her neck and kissed her. She looked into his eyes and he said “babe, im home”.  And she cried into his arms like she did six years ago.

She led him inside, and he followed. She sat him down and he waited for her to return, by then he was used to waiting for her. He told her his story of how his company was captured, held in prison for four years, and when the war was over he thought he was going to die.

He told the entire story, how they were first led there, in the cold, and hungry, how they were thrown into a prison cell to be left for the dead. The day the war ended the comander of the prison told the guards to kill every prisoner left alive. Their guard, told them it was alright, that they were going to be released and told them the way back to a place where they can be rescued. Again the man, born on good Friday cause he was a saint, his simple reply was, I was just in the right place at the right time. He appologized how it took him so long to get home, how many hospitals he had to go to, and how many generals he had to speak to, but he explained his will to survive was you. The Mans second fight for love, kelly asks “are you done playing with G.I. Joe’s?” .
