Achieving World Peace. Still Possible?

When we rise in the morning and listen to the radio or read the newspaper, we are confronted with the same sad news; violence, crime, wars, and disasters. I cannot recall a single day without a report of something terrible happening somewhere. Even in these modern times, it is clear that one’s precious life is not safe.

It is ironic that the more serious problems emanate from the more industrially advanced societies. Science and Technology have worked wonders in many fields, but the basic human problems remain. There is unprecedented literacy, yet this universal education does not seemed to have fostered goodness, but only mental restlessness and discontent instead. There is no doubt about the increase in our material progress and technology, but somehow this is not sufficient as we have not yet succeeded in bringing about peace and happiness or in overcoming suffering.

The world is filled with war, terrorism, turmoil and confusion. While men have created many amazing technological inventions, they cannot create peace. Scientists have unleashed the power of the atom but are powerless to unleash peace upon Earth. Astronomers have discovered much about the size, majesty, and precision of the universe, but they cannot find peace here on Earth.

War has been the primary means by which nations have settled disputes throughout history. It has been considered a natural state of equilibrium, while peace has been considered a period of recuperation.

World peace is possible but it is crucial to understand that it is not an easy process to achieve. There are many reasons why world peace can be possible like they are also tons of other reasons why world peace can be difficult to achieve.

Maybe you were wondering, how could we contribute to World Peace if our very own country doesn’t have it? People were fighting; crimes & corruption have been on the headlines every now and then, that’s one of the reasons why ‘Divide and Conquer’ have been the easiest way to the invaders. There is no symbol of peace or even altruism for that matter.

And who are to blame for all of these? The Political leaders? The religious sectors? Or simply us?

Peace can neither be bought from a sari-sari store nor delivered door-to-door. I am the youth of the land, and hopefully the future of this nation. But would you let me lead this country with my inexperienced hands and pure innocence? Can I bear the pressure and responsibilities? Can I avoid committing mistakes that will lead us to destruction? I can’t. I can’t do it alone. I appealed to the leaders, to the rich, to the poor, to parents, to kids, to everyone…the little good things you can do will be of great help in achieving World Peace.

Refusing to fight is not a sign of cowardice. A wise man carefully chooses his fight. We have to think about the future generation, our children, our fellowmen, we all want to live in harmony and peace. We could never live in fear and darkness. So, we should work hand in hand. We should have cooperation, we should be united.

We should not wait for tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. We should start today. Now, turn to the person next to you, smile, and sincerely say, “Peace be with You!”.
