I guess I can begin with the day Chase was born. It was in the middle of April, the 18th to be exact. I was 2nd grade and sitting in class. Ironically, we were working on our cursive C's. I remember Ms. Paut, the office lady, burst into my classroom looking like she had just sprinted a mile. Turns out, she had sprinted all the way to my class to let me know my mother was in labor. I ran out of the room with her, down the hall, to the parking lot where my father was waiting severely anxiously. I'd left my books, my backpack, all I was worried about was seeing my mother. We raced out of the parking lot, Ms. Paut waving and looking flustered, all the way to the emergency room. I had to wait with my aunt while my father headed into the delivery room. We sat there in the cold waiting room in those uncomfortable chairs for what seemed like forever. After 4 hours, a nurse came in to bring us to see her. I didn't know what to expect. All I knew was that my mother had better be okay, and that I wasn't going to be an only child. Other kids in my class told me to enjoy being one while I could, because once the baby was born I'd be invisible.
Once I saw him, my entire world changed. All I wanted to do was make him safe, and to be the best sibling I could be. I approached my mother, sure she had changed in more ways than one. She was .. different. I reached out to her, and she smiled. She told me that his name was Chase.
\"It's your job to protect him when we're gone. He's all you've got, and you're all he's got.\" I held him for about 20 minutes, both of us just looking at each other. When I looked at him, I knew he knew who I was. I'd protect him forever. I noticed something, too -His eyes were so blue. They were deeper than any ocean, and wider than any sky.
But nobody in my family had blue eyes.
