This is a villanelle that I had to write for a creative writing class. It is about the innocence and freedom of children, how they have no worries or problems and how we yearn to have that freedom back.

The life of a child is just a game.

No need to worry or indeed to fret,

A slip or a trip and they’re up again.

They play out their dreams of riches and fame,

Boss each other about, be king and queen.

The life of a child is just a game.

Boys fighting and shooting, they feel no shame.

“Bang! You’re dead, I shot you!” they say with glee.

A slip or a trip and they’re up again.

Girls dancing and skipping, singing refrains.

Sharing secrets about to be forgotten.

The life of a child is just a game.

Running around laughing, shouting friends’ names.

An accidental shove knocks one over,

A slip or a trip and they’re up again.

In all adult hearts lives a childish flame.

A burning passion to be free again.

The life of a child is just a game,

A slip or a trip and they’re up again.
