Slumped up against the cold brick wall,

Stiff muscles aching from curling up small,

Tears trickle slowly, drop to the floor,

But I’m fine.

Shoulders hunched and hugging my knees,

Black hair curtaining my face so nobody sees

The living dead eyes burning beneath,

But I’m fine.

Shrieks and profanities cascade on my ears,

I’m caught between their verbal spears,

The window is open, everybody hears,

But I’m fine.

Not even headphones drown out the cacophony

It’s infected my mind so I’m in ceaseless agony,

Raging blindly, killing child and fantasy,

But I’m fine.

The inevitable split eventually takes place,

Tearing my world apart in front of my face,

What was of it that remained in any case,

But I’m fine.

Several years later I have a man of my own,

So sweet and caring, perfection alone.

Yet I’m afraid, chilled to the bone,

I’m not fine.
