There was once a little girl

Pure in heart and soul

Grew up holding her parents’ hands

Though the beating and screaming she couldn’t control

She wanted to be the best at school

To see her mother’s smile

Friends to joke with, many she found

But no one to hold and cry

That little girl soon grew up

Went to study and live away

Miserable and lonely everyday she felt

Wished her parents and loved ones could stay

But in this scary black hole of a life

This girl did have a dream

To find someone who’d love her for who she was

Someone on whom she could always lean

A year and a half rushed by

She hoped, she prayed, she found God

Girl meets boy, it all came true

She smiled when he said she was odd

There was laughter and cheer

For nearly two whole years

Though something was changing within

The little girl desperate to fulfil her own dreams

Clung to this boy like skin

She didn’t understand why he couldn’t match her love

Was it resentment, was it hate?

Or was she just not good enough?

But by now it was already too late

Being mocked since childhood for her looks

Idolising the girls in magazines and books

Wallowing in an ocean of self-pity

Insecurity and moodiness reigned

Asking questions like ‘Do you think im pretty?’

Over and over again

This boy, though an angel, could not see

that he was the object of this girl’s dreams

 She wanted him

More than he did she

She felt safe in his arms

Her past set free

Wearing her heart on the tips of her fingers

Her emotional outbursts too much for him to take

He wasn’t sure how to make her smile

She never realised smiles could be fake

So the downfall of this relationship was her fault

She gave far too much too fast

She no longer held the mystery he knew

There was no way that it could last

So my children, listen close

Don’t make love your everything

Or you’ll be sobbing on your pillow like she

Left alone without anything
