I have stayed in this place ever since the fire. I waited for years. I am still waiting now.

I wait for him.

It was afternoon. The trees were decorated with bright green leaves. A small cabin was in a clearing of the forest. A young woman sat on the steps, humming to herself. Her eyes were joyous and bright green. She smiled up at the sky and suddenly ran inside. She looked around. “Charlie?” She called.

A man came out of one of the rooms. “I’m going for a walk, Catherine.”

“Come back soon, I’m baking cookies.” Catherine said.

“Don’t worry, I’ll come back,” Charlie grinned and kissed her.

Catherine waved goodbye as he left, and she skipped to the kitchen.

Something is burning. Look out the window. An orange blur. The pain. Fire, digging into my skin.Block it all out. Forget.

“Charlie!”

Pain, pain, pain, pain.

Charlie promised he would come back. He promised. He’ll come back any minute now, I’m sure of it. In the meantime, I wait. The cabin is broken, but that doesn’t matter. I think there was a fire.

Too bad the cookies burned.
