I sat listening to the clock, my chest rising and falling, the second hand timing the quiver of my heartbeat. Other sounds kicked on and off, people coming in, then slipping out - gentle coos of affection from some, screeches of intolerance from the next, but I paid them no mind, for my ears heard only the clock's ticking, they tuned only to its tapping breaths. The precious clock had already captivated my auditory senses.

My mind wondered separately if my ears knew that they were merely listening to their seconds tick away. When she posed this question to my ears, they responded, “Dear mind, silence your thoughts, for you know nothing of the outside world. I listen not to the ticking of my demise, but to the sound of wisdom and experience - for Time has seen far greater things than you ever will. So hush little mind. Sometimes, time is meant to be spent in peace.”
